Power Slowly Returning; Schools May Open Monday

About 40 percent of customers in Manchester have no electricity

With power slowly returning to Manchester — including most township schools — it is possible that students may be back in class next week.

JCP&L reports that electricity was restored to about 8,500 of its Manchester customers on Thursday, leaving about 7,500 in the dark. All schools in Manchester except for Ridgeway Elementary School now have power, according to Superintendent of Schools David Trethaway.

"We're trying to shoot for Monday (to reopen)," Trethaway said.

Except for some fallen trees, school buildings within the township appear to be in good condition inside and out, the superintendent said.

If things go according to plan, staff will work to ready the buildings over the weekend and school officials will announce the reopening.

Lakehurst Elementary School could open next week, provided the building has power, said Superintendent of Schools Jill Dobrowansky. About half of Lakehurst remains in the dark, according to JCP&L.

Should power return, "a final determination will be made on Sunday after I speak with local officials regarding the progress of removing downed trees and power lines," she said. "I need to ensure that our students can safely get to school since we are a walking district."

Electricity was restored to Manchester Township Elementary School Thursday morning, allowing officials to use the building as a warming station where powerless residents could charge their small electronics, warm up and have coffee and snacks.

Trethaway said that the power outages should not affect the anticipated post-Thanksgiving reopening of Manchester Township Middle School. Restoration efforts at the building have been ongoing after mold was discovered there in August.

A day or so ago there was an article about Lakehurst canceling Halloween and Manchester Lt. Dolan was quoted saying Manchester would hold Halloween on Saturday, Nov. 3 from 12 to 9pm. I assumed this was true even though the Gov. said it would be Monday considering the situation at the Middle School. My child doesn't get home until almost 6pm. It would be a dangerous situation to have school buses still traveling through the neighborhoods while the kids are all out. Saturday would be much safer. If anyone knows that correct date, please advise.

GOV SAID MONDAY AND I DO BELIEVE THERE IS A ARTICLE ON MANCHESTER PATCH THAT IT WILL BE MONDAY. PERSONALLY IT SHOULD BE CANCELLED ALL TOGETHER. BUT IN HOLLY OAKS WE STILL HAVE NO POWER AND LOTS OF LINES DOWN. AND RUMOR HAS IT WE ARE WAITING FOR SOMEONE WORKING ON THE TRANSFORMER, IF IT CAN'T BE FIX WE WILL NOT GET POWER FOR A LONG TIME. ITS FUNNY HOW ATLANTIC CITY IS NOW OPEN AND RUNNING AND ALL OF ATLANTIC CITY WILL HAVE POWER TONITE. BUT THERE ARE NO EXTRA TRANSFORMERS TO FIX OUR PROBLEM.

I would rather be living in Holly Oaks with no power than Atlantic City with no power. Hopefully, power was restored to AC residents, not just casinos.

Absolutely ridiculous that they are only restoring 73 residences in Lakehurst over the weekend, compared to THOUSANDS in Manchester.

How often does the Patch have an issue with only current news? I have to hunt to keep on top of news that is recent. If example, a news item dated Nov 2, 2012 giving
info about power returning slowly yet it looks like Twp. schools will open the next week...........why do I want to read that Jan 10, 2013. It just isn't relevant to today.

Hi Patch! Where is my comment/response? I submitted it on Mon. 5/27 and it was not nearly asRead More inflammatory as some I have seen, just concerned and inquisitive. It read as "pending" after I submitted it (who makes that judgement, I do not know) so I am curious...

You would do good if your were silent. You make very little sense and misstated the facts in justRead More about everything you said from landfill stickers to recycling to water revenue. What about when you needed a job, who gave you one? With the Director gone work will start going to contractors again. Everyone will pay. Taxpayers and employees. Did you read the article he wrote? If you didn't maybe you should. You too, nobody special. Who hired you? You will be picking up trash real soon. Are you going to grieve that too?

Director Stanziano has been singing the praises of his workers for years. Did you read ANY of theRead More past articles on the Patch and in Manchester Times? How about his articles in magazines with pictures of his workers? He wrote about how his workers saved the town money. HE got them all raises, NOT the union. Yes let's start with TOP HEAVY supervision. Start at the TOP on the 2nd floor of town hall. Time to cut some of the FAT!
