2012 Manchester Graduates Scholarship Roundup

Scholarships were awarded by various organizations to help students pay for college

Graduating Manchester students were awarded thousands of dollars in scholarships by local organizations in 2012 to help fund their future academic endeavors.

The Manchester Township Educational Foundation announced in June that it gave $13,500 to graduates. Two of those awards were in honor of U.S. Marine Cpl. Nicholas Ott, a 2006 graduate of the township . 

  • The Cpl. Nicholas Ott Memorial Scholarship, which was administered by the MTEF along with the Ott family, was awarded to Danielle Childers and Mary Kate Phillips. 
  • The Lakehurst-Manchester Lions Club awarded Ryan Kenny with its scholarship. Kenny plans to attend York College in Pennsylvania, where he will manage in sports management. 
  • The Charles J. Hesse III Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Kristen Foerg, who plans to major in business and accounting at The College of New Jersey. Hesse was the president of the Ocean County Landfill Corporation, among other local family-owned businesses, and "is fondly remembered as a driving force behind the construction of the Manchester Little League Complex and long-time supporter of local children’s charities," according to the MTEF.
  • The Crestwood Village IV Senior Citizens Club awarded Lauren Goldsberry, who will major in occupational therapy at Seton Hall University, and Matthew Zabiega, a future architectural engineering major at Drexel University. 

Also announcing scholarship awards was the Lakehurst-Manchester Rotary Club, which gave three MTHS graduates $1,000 scholarships each. The awards were "based on academic achievement and service to our community," according to the organization. Those awarded scholarships were:

  • Danielle Childers, who will study occupational therapy at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut.
  • Amber Smith, a pre-med major who will attend Ramapo College in New Jersey.
  • Engineering major Matthew Zabiega, who plans to attend Drexel University in Pennsylvania. 

was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from Plymouth Rock Assurance, Teachers' Insurance Plan of New Jersey, according to the school district. Five students in districts participating in the Quotes for Cash fundraising program, with which Manchester is involved, are selected. 

Beck, who plans to student neuroscience at Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania, was also recognized as a "Mayors' Scholar" and awarded $1,000 by the Ocean County Mayor's Association.
