School District Launches Parent Portal Website

Portal provides parents with online access to school information

A recently launched website will allow parents to keep track of their student's progress through an online interface.

The portal is linked to a PowerSchool Student Information System used by teachers to provide attendance, grades and assignments on the portal which can be accessed through a home computer, said Lee Bruzaitis, district public relations officer, in a statement.

"Students stay on top of assignments, parents are able to participate more fully in their student's progress, and teachers can use their grade book to share information with parents and students," she said.

Those in grades 8 through 11 have already used the website to register for next year's classes. This month, the portal also opens to students in grades 6 through 12 and their parents, Bruzaitis said.

Administrators hope that the portal will help busy parents stay better connected with their children's academic careers.

"I realize it is sometimes difficult for parents to find time to monitor their child's progress because of the many commitments that occur throughout the day," said Superintendent of Schools David Trethaway. "I also realize the importance of parental involvement in a student's education."

Trethaway said that the portal is another way for the district to engage parents. The district launched a this school year to that end.

"This is the reason that our school district is continually exploring new ways to provide information for our parents," he said.

A mailing containing login and password information was sent sent to parents this month. Instructions on using the portal are available online and through programs running on MTHS-21, the district's television station.
