Celebrate Manchester Junior Leaguers' Run Saturday

A day honoring the local state champs is on tap starting at 10 a.m.

Manchester Little League’s first-ever state champs will get their well-deserved kudos at a special celebration Saturday.

The Junior League team, which made a run through the summer, winning the New Jersey title and challenging for the Eastern Regional championship, will be celebrated at the Little League complex on Ridgeway Road starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, and the entire township’s invited.

The 14-year-old squad, which has played as a team since they were 9, made a habit of comebacks during their run, falling to West Deptford in the state tournament, only to defeat that same opponent to claim the state title in Tinton Falls at the end of July.

The Manchester kids then reeled off a 5-1 record in the Eastern Regional tournament in Freehold, where they got back-to-back wins to open play, before falling to Pennsylvania and starting a run through the elimination bracket.

Manchester ended up getting revenge on Pennsylvania in the elimination-bracket final to set up the championship against New York.

Though the locals won one game, 7-4, to force a decisive, winner-take-all title game, New York proved to have the edge in the end.
