Lakehurst Summer Fishing Derby Begins in June

Three months worth of competition will be held this summer

Lakehurst's 2012 Summer Fishing Derby is set to kick off with its first month of competition in June.

Registration for the three contests — one is held in June, July and August — is open to borough residents who are 17-years-old and younger, according to Clerk Bernadette Dugan. Participants can sign up at on Union Avenue and one registration is good for all contests.

"Each month will be a separate contest with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes awarded for pickerel and/or catfish caught in ," Dugan said.

Prizes of rods and reels were donated by Lakehurst Dental Dr. Brian Klohn and Dick's Sporting Goods of Manahawkin provided a 30 percent discount on prizes as a donation to the derby, Dugan said. 

Upon registration, the child is given a list of participants who will weigh the fish, Dugan said, and fish must be returned to the lake alive.

The complete rules are as follows:

  • There will be three separate contests, one in June, one in July, and one in August. Each month will be a new contest. Fish cannot be carried over from month to month. 
  • Only one place per category may be won per month. If you win first place, you cannot win second or third place in the same category that month. 
  • There will be minimum size limits for the fish to be caught. 
  • Pickerel must be at least seventeen inches in length to be checked in. 
  • Catfish must be at least eleven inches in length to be checked in. 
  • If your fish can still be returned to the water, it must be alive, you will be awarded an extra 1/2 inch to its length.  No check-in after 11:00 p.m. 
  • Parents can help small children, but please don't get carried away with winning, remember it is for the children.
