Did You See the Circus in Lakehurst? Add Your Photos!

Two shows were held Thursday in the borough

Were you one of the over 1,000 spectators to attend the first circus in Lakehurst since 1996?

Manchester Patch was at the Kelly Miller Circus on Thursday, when the travelling performers put on two shows. Check out the photos we snapped, but more importantly, we'd like to see your shots — you can upload them right to this article.

Elephants, camels and zebras joined human performers including acrobats, clowns and jugglers for the two hour performances at the borough's ball field at the corner of Chestnut and Myrtle Streets, near the .

"The tent is the star of the show as well," said Ringmaster John Moss, who has been in the circus business since 1985. "It's unusual these days to see a circus under a tent."

The circus was brought to the borough by the Lakehurst Volunteer Fire Department as a fundraiser, and a portion of ticket sales went to the emergency responders.

More information on the Kelly Miller Circus, including other tour dates, is available online.

The circus always invites everyone to come on down and see how the elephants are thriving. If you went before show time while the elephants are penned up next to the semi-trailer they live in, you would have seen them swaying their bodies and trunk in a rhythmic manner and the tigers spacing in the small cages they live in 24/7. These are signs of severe stress from constants confinement.
This video shows Becky an elephant that is on tour with Kelly Miller Circus being trained behind closed doors. "You can't do it on the road," Frisco says. "I'm not going to touch her in front of a thousand people." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iouGQD6lf6A In October 7, 2011 the USDA cited Carson & Barnes performing as the Kelly Miller Circus, with a direct violation of the AWA for failure to have an experienced animal handler in direct control of a dangerous animal during public elephant rides. http://acissearch.aphis.usda.gov/LPASearch/faces/CustomerSearch.jspx;jsessionid=7f00000130d9d29ba5d134f743e68724964dd452ceb5.e38Obx8Sb3yQby0LbN8SaxmRc3eSe0 These are some of the reasons my family no longer attends circuses we believe animals should be treated humanely and circus animals are not.

Thank you all that came out and supported the fire department. Everyone seemed to have positive feed back and enjoyed the show. Thank you.

If the families that attended had seen the video of Becky the elephant they probably rode, being beaten, shocked and burned with a blow torch to make her perform circus tricks, I doubt that many would have attended much less had something positive to say. Sadly when the fire department promotes the circus people assume that they offer wholesome family entertainment. I’m truly shocked that the fire department would associate with such a group when there is so much proof of the inhumane and cruel life the exotic animals live. I wish people would just make a cash donation to the fire department, instead of supporting a circus that mistreats their animals.

Ellie, We checked the USDA site and animal cruelty was not mentioned or cited. And following your post it apparent that your an extreme activists. And that fine. But it seems you post about all circuses. It was a great event for all, not just cause of the animals, but unity and families abroad.

If you call me an extremist for believing that animals should at the very least be treated and trained humanely, then call me whatever name you like, I know animal abuse for entertainment when I see it.
KMC leases the elephants from Carson & Barnes Circus who owns the elephants, all USDA violations/fines go against the owners license and not the leasee license. That is why you didn’t find anything when you looked up Kelly Miller Circus USDA License #73-C-0021 because they lease most of their exotic animal acts from others. This is Carson & Barnes USDA License Number 73-C-0001 you can read the violations that happened under KMC watch. http://acissearch.aphis.usda.gov/LPASearch/faces/CustomerSearch.jspx https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:JUnZxAB7ye4J:www.aphis.usda.gov/foia/enforcement_actions/2012/January/Animal%2520Welfare%2520Act/7060s/NY11379-AC,%2520Natalie%2520Cainan,%25207060_Redacted.pdf+USDA+violations+%22Natalie+Cainan+%22&hl=en&gl=ca&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESjxT9k59IEPBepIGNBn3jF1N3D7JZlR_7-UdWyAC8JTWwxLsWYzJKxxIm9zJijOvusne7NNFR0f3Ohra2F_DJE9IibpzuyH5V9_oc4tPlXAlebMx-7HtOAEVWjiXc6pz6X1qnBV&sig=AHIEtbR3frOfpuO6m1aibNNkgSdd56rslg On 10/7/2011 the USDA cited Carson & Barnes performing as the Kelly Miller Circus, with a direct violation of the AWA. http://acissearch.aphis.usda.gov/LPASearch/faces/CustomerSearch.jspx;jsessionid=7f00000130d9d29ba5d134f743e68724964dd452ceb5.e38Obx8Sb3yQby0LbN8SaxmRc3eSe0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rx4hC7OOuek

The circus was a fantastic idea and it should be brought back next year. O yea that's right it will be next year! My opinion ( which Im entilted too ) is that the circus will have a better turnout than this year. I can't wait.
Ellie June 19, 2012 at 02:02 pm
Sadly if the fire department and parents don’t educate themselves about the inhumane life these wild animals live just to entertain them for a few moments, they probably will return to see the circus. But if they do some research about elephants natural behaviors and how everything normal to a elephant is deprived and beaten out of them to make them perform unnatural circus tricks they will never go to another circus with animal performers again.
Children have to depend on their parents to make correct choices for them. A child can live a happy life without a circus with animals. There are fun events all over the place that do not exploit animals. As a parent it is up to you to raise a compassionate and considerate kid. I am just trying to share with other families what has been reported about the Circus. I’ve taken the time to educate myself that is why my family will never attend a circus knowing of the cruelty that occurs behind the scenes.
