A Michigan man is dead after a gun safety lesson went tragically wrong Sunday.

A 36-year-old man from Independence Township reportedly shot himself in the head while trying to show his girlfriend how safe guns are, the Detroit Free Press reports.

He reportedly had been drinking all day.

When authorities from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office arrived about 9 p.m., the man’s girlfriend was performing CPR. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

She said her boyfriend held two handguns to his head and pulled the trigger while explaining they’re safe when they’re unloaded. When he repeated the demonstration with a third firearm, a bullet discharged.

Undersheriff Michael McCabe told the Oakland Press that the situation was “pretty unique.”

“I have never heard of anyone testing out the safety of a gun by pointing at their head and pulling the trigger,” he said.

Three children, ages 7, 10 and 12, who were at the residence were not hurt and did not witness the shooting.

The investigation is continuing.

Strange how states have different election laws. I think there are 2 states where the pres election is not winner take all. I know in Maine one can win a congressional district while his opponent can win the other district. I think the other state is ND , not quite sure . Don't know how they split that.
Jordan S. Zoot February 27, 2014 at 06:46 PM
The third one that I know of that is split is Nebraska

In general, why would any party want registered voters from another party voting in the primary and choosing their candidates who would run in the general election? Republicans effecting the outcome of Democratic primaries and vise versa. Crazy.
TONY D February 27, 2014 at 07:30 PM
SF - "Independent" is an actual party in my state. If you have no party affiliation you register as "undeclared". KJ - If you are "undeclared" you can change to "declared" so you can vote in a primary if you happen to have a preferred candidate in a certain party. I happened to have had private insurance for all of my life. I pay my premiums, deductibles and co-pays. I pay my taxes so people that are not as fortunate as myself can have affordable health coverage. My/our tax payments certainly pay a good portion their of health coverage. Not that I like doing that but in this country the majority rules. We all don't have to agree with the various and sundry laws in effect.
knee jerk February 27, 2014 at 07:41 PM
@Jordan Soot Suit: Went to your link, it was informative, good stuff. It looks like the open primaries are mostly in the "red" states (you know the old confederate states, that practiced voter intimidation and an otherwise lack of voter rights, but that's another story) where election manipulation was historically rampant. Those are also usually "right to work states" (right to not have to join a union and work for substandard wages). Now it all seems to fit together.
Jordan S. Zoot February 27, 2014 at 07:53 PM
KJ.....not sure how this thread drifted to politics....it certainly wasn't where my comments were focused but now that you mention it...let's not forget that the party responsible for founding the KKK was the Democrats. Further, I really don't have any problem with "right to work", particularly for public employees....Scott Walker is doing a great job in Wisconsin...unfortunately, those of us in Illinois are about to get screwed by Governor Jello who is going to try to make a temporary income tax rate permanent.....one more reason to move out of Illinois.
TONY D February 27, 2014 at 08:02 PM
KJ - You have just joined the "moronic status" if you believe that someone has to be in a union to be able to work in the United States. I have never been a member of a union and have been quite successful. And no I am not part of the "1%". But we have certainly deviated from the main subject. We do not require additional gun control laws. Only the proper enforcement of the existing ones.
knee jerk February 27, 2014 at 08:23 PM
@Tony D: You're right, proper enforcement of the gun laws on the books could work. However, trying to enforce them is like trying to kill ants with an ice pick, one at a time, it'll never work and hasn't. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome- you fall into this group of mental midgets....As far as "right to work states" for substandard wages, why would KIA, Toyota, Hyundai etc ,etc, want to open plants in the USA in these states unless they could exploit the workers like they do in their own countries? DUH?
Jordan S. Zoot February 27, 2014 at 08:29 PM
KJ...you miss a small point...I don't remember any of the workers being marched into one of those plants at gun point. If they want the job great...if they don't that is ok too. There is no reason for an employer to pay one dime more then they need to to get a sufficient supply of appropriate workers. If they can't find what they need they raise what they pay...eventually it comes into balance....that's what we call a market economy...if you prefer the alternative feel free to move to North Korea.
knee jerk February 27, 2014 at 08:43 PM
Zoot... You miss a large point: build your factory in a depressed, poorly educated economic area (red states) where the local economy is in the tubes and "they will come" and make concessions. What's sad is these companies do this to confuse the "Made in America" issue also.
Jordan S. Zoot February 27, 2014 at 08:47 PM
KJ...wow....so let me see if I get your point..."made in america" doesn't apply to the entire United States? Choosing a depressed area to build a factory and provide jobs is a bad choice. No clearly you are missing the point, the car company is FREE to locate where ever it wants....we just saw workers in Tennessee REJECT a union at a VW plant....so your point is?
Richard Cranium February 27, 2014 at 08:58 PM
"this situation isn't about gun control, its about imbecile control." Exactly but how is that done? No test of intelligence to breed, vote or carry a firearm. So this guy is one of many where the rounds in his magazine outnumbered his I.Q.
knee jerk February 27, 2014 at 09:00 PM
Zoot: Come on you're a Republican- Abraham Lincoln "Why buy the rails from England, the profit goes over there. If we make them here, we keep the profit". In this modern spin off, we make them here at low wages and send the profit over there. Just as we Americans exploited the rest of the world in another era, it's coming home to roost. A recipe for disaster.
Jordan S. Zoot February 27, 2014 at 09:03 PM
The key here is that the imbecile needs to control himself by following some basic firearm safety rules.
Deb Hardiman February 27, 2014 at 10:30 PM
Guns and booze do not mix.
knee jerk February 27, 2014 at 10:45 PM
Maybe not Deb, but BIG guns and booze definitely go together.

Anybody remember who got shot in the back of the head in a theater----------------------it was the poor guy that was sitting in front of Pee Wee Herman
Frank Esposito March 04, 2014 at 07:36 AM
The investigation is continuing? I hope so... I hope there is detailed forensic exam done too (I'm sure that's likely). Only person how knows what really happen is the women. Right now the story goes "he shot himself in head giving me a gun safety lesson". Very possible, but there are many other likelihoods here also.
Jordan S. Zoot March 04, 2014 at 08:12 AM
Frank you are totally paranoid...the idiot shot himself in the head..this ought be proven in all of five seconds.
Frank Esposito March 04, 2014 at 11:05 AM
Mr zoot those test will be conducted during investigation. Will you call the local pd there paranoid or professional for doing so?
Richard Cranium March 04, 2014 at 11:23 AM
Frank, my taxes pay the salary of that local PD. I don't expect much budgetary impact for the "investigation". Sometimes these things are this simple.
Jordan S. Zoot March 04, 2014 at 11:49 AM
Frank...the local police dept. has the task of investigating it....for them its routine and going to be a simple matter....for you to start to make it into something beyond that does fit my definition of paranoid.
ME2 March 04, 2014 at 12:04 PM
The subject is, "How to commit suicide under the influence with two or more firearms"! Unless the accomplice has a different story, with witnesses. Mental iilness is a good defense because he's still innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Dead or alive will it make a difference for the Justice/Legal system we have in the USA?
Richard Cranium March 04, 2014 at 01:14 PM
Either way he failed at the lesson.
Frank Esposito March 05, 2014 at 06:30 AM
Mr. Zoot are you saying that I show an extreme and irrational fear or distrust of others? That is the definition of paranoid. As a former LEO, I believe people here ragging on the guy as an idiot - and rapping up the case in their own mind - and excepting this on face value of the facts here - and such comments - should be tempered until all the facts of the investigation are in. A homicide has taken place, whether by his own hand and/or that of another, or other possibilities. I called the Susan Smith case as fishy as soon as I heard the story. My wife was incensed by my comment. We all know how that story turned out.

Frank: With your keen powers of deduction do you feel OJ did it?
steve forte March 12, 2014 at 12:59 PM
Of course OJ did it. Even the jury when questioned said they thought he did it but the prosecuter didn't prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he did.
