Your Prescription Sunglass Questions answered by Joel Wolf of Village Opticians

Why do I need to wear sunglasses?
I'm sure you are well aware of what harmful UV rays can do to your skin, but do you realize that you're eyes are at risk as well.  Over time, those same UV rays can do significant damage to your eyes. Proper sunglasses are essential for your ongoing health. Especially  as our weather continues to be more inviting and we spend more time enjoying activities outside of our homes. Just as you would apply sunscreen or wear a hat or long sleeves to protect yourself, you should be providing  your eyes with proper UV protection. Sunglasses provide not only comfort on bright, sunny days, but also essential UV protection on overcast days. Make sure any sunglasses you buy offer 100% UV protection.

What if I already have prescription eyeglasses?
There are several options for you:You can purchase clip-on or magnetic sun lenses that can be worn over your existing eyeglasses. These will provide adequate UV protection but tend to be easily forgotten or misplaced. You can purchase sunglasses that are equipped with your prescription lenses. You will probably find that prescription sunglasses are easier to locate and remember as you're running out the door, or when the sun unexpectedly comes your way while driving. You can also choose to wear transition lenses. These are eyeglasses with your prescription lenses that transition from "indoor" to "outdoor" as needed. These glasses will not provide you with sufficient glare protection while driving, so you might want to consider a different option to address your needs if you spend a lot of time behind the wheel.

What if I am a contact lens wearer?
If you usually wear contact lenses, you may think that less expensive non prescription sunglasses are sufficient. As long as they are offering your eyes 100% UV protection this is indeed sufficient. But you might want to think about all the times you are not wearing your contact lenses. Most of these times are during outdoor activities. If you go somewhere sandy, windy, dusty, or where water will get in your eyes, having the option of seeing clearly and protecting your eyes with a pair of prescription sunglasses would be ideal.

Can I afford prescription sunglasses?
Cost is always a concern, as it should be. You should always ask about special offers and take advantage of advertised discounts. Many offices offer coupons and/or specials. If supporting your local businesses is important to you I would suggest that you check your local newspaper for any advertised discounts. But more importantly talk to your Optician about your particular needs. He or she can help you personally select the proper eyeglasses at a price that also works best for you. They may be a lot cheaper than you expect.

What are my style options?
Your selection choices for prescription sunglasses are practically endless. You can select from a huge variety of styles, from inexpensive casual frames to high-fashion designer sunglass frames. Lenses for prescription sunglasses are available in a wide variety of materials and tints. The tint color and level of darkness you select is not related to the level of UV protection. In other words, even those light blue tinted glasses that you've always loved can give you the protection you need if they are 100% UV protected. Also, the very darkest of lenses are not properly protecting your eyes unless they are 100% UV protected.
You can protect your eyes conveniently while still enjoying the comfort and style of the eyeglasses of your choice.Visit your local optician to further discuss your options for prescription sunglasses.
