Children's Show Celebrates Diversity at OCC on Sunday

Yosi, children's entertainer and Eugene, a puppet, will use music and fun to teach kids "different" is OK

Scared of monsters? Then you might miss out on all the fun.

That's the message kids will be getting on Sunday when Yosi Levin, longtime children's performer, and Eugene, his special buddy (and puppet) put on a show about how "being different" isn't just OK, it's fun.

The show will be at 1 p.m. Sun. at Ocean County College's Arts & Community Center, Building #18. Visitors should use Parking Lot #2.

Eugene, a hand puppet that looks like a monster, will accompany Yosi, who has been strumming and crooning to wee ones for many years throughout the region.

The event web page says: "Meet Eugene! Eugene is a super-friendly, super-strong, super-exuberant monster, who is misunderstood by nearly everyone except young children.

"Along with his friends, award-winning children's recording artist, Yosi, and puppeteer-actor, Johnny Beirne, Eugene can be your friend, too! Songs, stories, and great humor brings kids closer to understanding that being different is not just good, it's fantastic!"

Beirne was only 5 years old when he saw his first Yosi show. That was 16 years ago when Yosi first started working the kid circuit.

Now Beirne is 21 and studying theater at Rowan University.

"He's very talented," said Yosi in an email. "We sing together before Eugene comes out of his box. Johnny on uke  and me on guitar for three songs. Then Johnny helps get the audience dancing as I play a couple of tunes.

"Then he disappears and Eugene pops out of his box to sing and tell stories. The message is about appreciating differences and embracing your uniqueness while having lots of fun."
