@Eric, Thanks for taking the time to reply. You should know that I posted this question on severalRead More forums and got considerably more yeas then nay's. I must say that yours was the best "No" reply I received. I wasn't aware of Shays Rebellion and found it interesting reading. I've recently been reading a fair amount on history lately and without pushing my beliefs on anyone and without out trying to sound like Mr. smarty pants, bring up general topics from time to time in conversation. You wouldn't believe the sense of hatred and distain I get from people I know to be liberals if they don't like what I'm saying. Yes I know it's all in the delivery... right Even when I try to present it in a different manner I sense the same thing. So I got to thinking. What if we, meaning fiscal conservatives who want a future for our children and generations to follow, can use this to rattle the cage of the liberals a bit. Just for fun. Thanks again, Sun PS. What's your favorite song from the 50's?

This is fairly easy to calculate - assuming you have access to a computer. The line from your eyesRead More to the horizon is a tangent to the earth's surface. So your eyes, the point on the horizon and the earths center form a right angled triangle. The line from your eyes to the center of the earth is the hypotenuse. So we can find the distance from your eyes to the horizon using Pythagoras theorem a^2=b^2-c^2 In this case c is the radius of the earth - 3,963 miles or 20,924,640 feet b is the radius of the earth plus the height of your eyes - 20,924,646 feet a^2 = b^2-c^2 = 251,095,716 Therefore a = 15,846 feet or almost exactly 3 miles. If your eyes are only 5 feet off the ground then the distance you can see is 14,465 feet or 2.75 miles. You would need to have your eyes 150 feet off the water in order to see 15 miles.

I attended one of the meetings that was held at their office at Ocean County College and suggested aRead More new inlet be installed which would provide flushing of the bay. They responded with "it would allow invasive species into the bay" Never told me what the invasive species were! Sandy opened Mantalokin but was quickly closed and nearby in the 1800's, Cranbury inlet was where boats entered to port in Toms River but was partially closed by a hurricane and developers jumped on the closure to make Seaside Park. What Rutgers wants is funding to continue to keep study programs in place for their benefit.

MAYBE THE BAY COULD BE FILLED IN, THEN WE WOULD HAVE MORE PARKING. SAM
Rock.n.Roll July 20, 2014 at 07:57 am
Bill, they were totally mis-informed to give that as a reason. The real reason you cannot openRead More another inlet is because it would raise the level of the bay waters to a point where they come further inland and flood properties. Their are many reasons the bay is in decline. Fertilizers leeching into the waters from residents lawn care, improper use of personal watercraft in back bay natural lagoons, wiping out marine life and killing what eel grass is left, over development along shore lines (even the state with overdeveloping the county park at the Mantoloking Bridge, and putting in too too many boat slips which will even increase more boats (gasoline leakage - I see the slicks every morning on top of the water !), crabbing with chicken for bait (pollutes the bay), I could go on, I live on the bay and see all the bad things going on. We already have an infiltration of sea nettles jelly fish which kills other marine life (came up from the Chessapeak Bay).
