Striped bass season opens Friday
Striped bass season begins in the back bays and rivers March 1, and Patch caught up with Dennis Palmatier of Murphy's Hook House Bait and Tackle in Toms River for some tips. The regulations for striped bass remains two fish per angler, per day, with a minimum size limit of 28 inches. Striped bass season in the back bays and rivers runs from March 1 through Dec. 31. In the ocean, the season is open year-round. Anglers fishing Oyster Creek should keep in mind that fishing the west side of the Route 9 bridge over the creek requires a freshwater fishing license. Fishing the east side of the bridge does not, though all anglers statewide must obtain a free registration card online before fishing.

State council will determine final regulations for 2013 fishing season
With the 2013 spring and summer fishing season appearing to many who lost their homes and boats in Superstorm Storm as a pipe dream, the annual debate on fishing regulations for the state's most popular recreational species is moving ahead as it normally does during the off season. Next week, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission will meet, with a subcommittee expected to approve several regulatory options – one of which the New Jersey Marine Fisheries Council will ultimately choose next year's summer flounder regulations. All of the options on the table before the ASMFC take into account an approximately 15 percent cut in quota from the 2012 season, where the minimum size limit fell to 17.5 inches after years at an 18 inch …

Brick Resident has served with team in many roles
The Lakewood BlueClaws wasted no time naming a new General Manager with opening day just around the corner and did not have to look far to find a new leader. Brandon Marano, who most recently served as the team's Assistant General Manager of Operations, was named the new GM this week according to a story posted on the team's website. Marano has spent more than a decade with the BlueClaws and succeeds Geoff Brown, the team's original general manager who recently left for a job with the Rutgers University athletic department. The BlueClaws will have another busy year at FirstEnergy Park including hosting the South Atlantic League All Star Game for the second time in the team's history.
Facebook data shows most Jersey users are rooting for the 49ers, switching their allegiance (temporarily) from the Giants or Eagles
It's not a surprise that most Facebook users in New Jersey started the football season solidly supporting the New York Giants or Philadelphia Eagles. "While winning seems to matter, NFL teams have local followings that are probably heavily influenced by family ties and/or where a person grew up," according to Facebook, which recently compiled data on users who are fans of an NFL team on the social network. But now that the locals' seasons are over and the Baltimore Ravens are heading to Super Bowl XLVII against the San Francisco 49ers, Jersey residents have shifted their allegiance. Perhaps surprisingly, the vast majority of New Jersey Facebook users favor the West Coast 49ers, with fans from Cape May, Salem, Gloucester and Camden counties…

Manasquan resident worked with team since its founding
For the first time since the team was founded in 1999 the Lakewood BlueClaws will have a new general manager when the season starts in April. Geoff Brown, a resident of Manasquan, who was the first employee hired by the team, recently announced that he is leaving the Lakewood team to become senior associate athletic director/chief marketing officer for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. In a story on Minor League Baseball's website, Brown said making the move was not an easy decision. "This is a bittersweet day for me," said Brown. "For 13 years, this has been my home and my second family. Leaving Lakewood and the BlueClaws was certainly a difficult decision, but the opportunity to work for Tim Pernetti [Rutgers Director of Intercollegiate …
