Several overdoses in Southern Ocean County reported in recent weeks.
All last year, there were 53 drug overdoses reported in Ocean County. In the first three months of this year, there have been 43 overdoses - nine of which occurred over an eight-day period in April. Five of those were related to heroin, according to Al Della Fave, with the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office. That spike in overdoses has prompted officials with the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office to team up with Atlantic County officials to form a task force to tackle what several law enforcement officials have dubbed a heroin "crisis" in the area. Bail set at $300,000 for 31-year-old Barnegat woman.
A 31-year-old Barnegat woman - who is a teacher in the Toms River Regional school system - has been charged with criminal sexual contact against a student, according to a press release. Ocean County Prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford said in the press release that Erin T. Haskell, who teaches at Intermediate South in Beachwood, has been charged with having an inappropriate relationship with one of her students, a minor. Due to the student's age, the Prosecutor's Office did not disclose any other information about the student. Haskell has been charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and exhibiting obscene material to a minor. Just two days after officials with Atlantic City Electric noted they had restored power to all those in the area that could accept it, sporadic outages were reported once again in the Manahawkin-Barnegat area, following an early snowstorm yesterday. Although there was little accumulation in the Manahawkin-Barnegat area, the weather taxed already battered power lines, leaving a handful of people in the area without power. One resident in the Ocean Acres section of Manahawkin reported not having power for only about an hour. The snow came just nine days after Hurricane Sandy ripped through the area leaving downed trees, power outages and flooding.
