Slain officer served as police explorer before joining Lakewood force
Christopher Matlosz was one of the newest members of the Howell Police Explorer's Club in the summer of 1997. This past week Matlosz, who lived in Pine Lake Park at the time of his death in January 2011, was honored by the Howell Police Department not only for making the ultimate sacrifice during his service with the Lakewood Police Department, but also for his time with his hometown officers. Jahmell Crockam was convicted of murdering the Manchester resident and sentenced to life in prison in March of this year. The rainy, dreary day was appropriate, said Lakewood Chief of Police Robert Lawson as he addressed the cyclists. "This is a solemn occasion," he said. "I know its not very …

Officers from Manchester will bicycle to Washington DC beginning Wednesday
On Wednesday, Manchester police will begin a trek to Washington DC where they will visit the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, a monument honoring those who died in the line of duty. "We have an officer on the wall," said Detective Chris Hemhauser. That officer is Robert Tobias, a patrolman who was killed while conducting a Route 70 traffic stop on May 17, 1975, when he was struck by a driver who left the roadway. Tobias was 23-years-old at the time of his death and had been on the force for one year. The tour, which will kick off in Howell at about 8:30 a.m., allows the memory of Tobias and other fallen officers to live on. "It reminds us of all the officers who died in the line of duty," said Chief of Police Brian Klimakowski…

Now should be the time for celebration, Walsifer said, as she was supposed to marry Matlosz next month, on April 21. "That's what I should be thinking about — our wedding," said Walsifer, who attended the sentencing despite battling a cold. "The defendant stole that from us." "Mr. Crockam was luckier than Chris.
