Though Manchester's Township Council typically meets on the second and fourth Monday of each month, Oct. 8 isn't a typical day. It just happens to be Columbus Day, a federal holiday that commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World on October 12, 1492. So, council members will gather in the Municipal Complex courtroom on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 6 p.m. for their first of two regular meetings this month. Also notable is that Manchester and Lakehurst schools are closed to students, though staff will have an in-service day. Columbus Day is a federal holiday that commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World on October 12, 1492. Columbus Day was unofficially celebrated across the country in the 18th century but did not become a federal holiday until 1937, according to the History Channel. Although the holiday and Columbus have stirred up controversy, many celebrate to honor his achievements and Italian-American heritage. Manchester's governing body will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 11
Manchester's Township Council will not have its first regular meeting of the month at its usual time on Monday, as this session has been scheduled a day later due to the Columbus Day holiday. The council will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 6 p.m. in the courthouse of the municipal complex on Colonial Drive. The agenda shows that the township, which operates on a fiscal year calendar running from July through June, will introduce the 2012 municipal budget. Other agenda items include approving new bus stops proposed by Academy Bus and authorizing a Green Acres grant. 1. The Fall Festival at the Northern Ocean County Animal Facility, 615 Freemont Ave., Jackson, runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
