3 Ocean County Historical Organizations Receive Grants From State Historical Commission

Ocean County Historical Society among 75 recipients of more than $2 million in grants

The state Historical Commission will be providing a total of $45,484 between three Ocean County historical organizations to fund the museum’s programs.  Barnegat Bay Decoy and Baymen's Museum, Inc. in Tuckerton will receive $17,428, the Ocean County Historical Society will get $15,000 and the Ocean County Cultural and Heritage Commission will et $13,056. The Ocean County non-profits were among 75 historical organizations around the state to receive grants totaling $2,332,659 — the most money ever awarded by the state Historical Commission. The commission announced the awards Tuesday. Years of Service Earn Couple 2010 Lakehurst Citizens of the Year Honor

Owen and Janet Heller received the borough honor recognizing their volunteer work within the community

Every year, the Borough of Lakehurst honors its Citizen of the Year. The choice must be someone who serves the community and displays dedication and perseverance. For 2010, Janet and Owen Heller fit that bill, resolved Mayor Timothy Borsetti and the Lakehurst Borough Council in early December. Upon learning about the recognition, Mrs. Heller simply said that she was "flabbergasted." "I don't know who nominated us, but I want to thank them," she said. It all began in 1969, when the husband and wife packed their bags and headed to Lakehurst from sunny California. Mr. Heller served in the U.S. Navy, and after retirement continued his work at the Lakehurst Naval Base and later retired again from civil service. While Mr. Heller was serving the …
