Lakehurst Elementary School Closed Friday

Administration had planned for students to return to class on Friday after snowfall

Lakehurst Elementary School students will not return to class until Monday, Nov. 12, after a nor'easter dumped about 8 inches of snow throughout the borough on Wednesday. The school was set to reopen Friday on an early dismissal schedule, but Superintendent of Schools Jill Dobrowansky said that "extensive damage" throughout the borough required another day closed. A transformer explosion Wednesday night knocked out power to parts of Lakehurst's downtown. Though over 600 of JCP&L's over 1,200 Lakehurst customers were without power on Thursday following the storm, that number has decreased to 68 as of Thursday night. Lakehurst Elementary School Closed This Week; Borough's Trick or Treat Canceled

Warming center at fire department will be open through Sunday

Lakehurst Elementary School will not open until Monday, Nov. 12, Superintendent of Schools Jill Dobrowansky announced Friday. "After speaking with the local authorities, the Lakehurst School District will remain closed throughout next week," she said in an email to Patch. Student safety was a concern in reopening the downtown Lakehurst school, the superintendent has said. Electric wires are down and borough police on Friday warned that some less secure lines could fall if wind picks up, according to police. "I need to ensure that our students can safely get to school since we are a walking district," Dobrowansky said Thursday. UPDATE: Manchester and Lakehurst Schools Closed for Remainder of Week

Many buildings in Lakehurst, including the elementary school, are without power

All schools in Manchester and Lakehurst are closed for the remainder of the week, administrators from both districts have announced. Lakehurst Elementary School, located in the borough's downtown, has been without power since Hurricane Sandy struck on Monday. Classes already were canceled through Wednesday, Superintendent of Schools Jill Dobrowansky said. Manchester Superintendent of Schools David Trethaway said Wednesday afternoon that all schools, including Regional Day School in Jackson, also will be closed for the remainder of the week.  Dobrowansky said that she was told by JCP&L that it may take 7 to 10 days for power to be restored, an estimate the utility company has quoted to other officials.

UPDATE: Manchester and Lakehurst Schools Announce Storm Closures

Closures made in preparation for the impending strike of Sandy

In advance of Hurricane Sandy, education administrators in Manchester and Lakehurst have decided to cancel classes. All Manchester schools will be closed on Monday and Tuesday, according to an announcement posted to the district website. Lakehurst Elementary School will be closed on Monday and Tuesday, Superintendent of Schools Jill Dobrowansky. It was first announced that the school would only be closed on Monday. "District administration will continue to monitor the weather and make further determinations as necessary," she said.  Ocean County College, Georgian Court University, Brookdale Community College and Monmouth University all have announced that they will be closed on Monday and Tuesday.
