Now that Sandy and the nor’easter that dumped up to a foot of snow are behind us, the cleanup has begun. Many homes were without power for a week or more. Some homes even got their power back only to lose it again. I thank the residents for their patience and cooperation during this trying time. Our Fire Department not only helped rescue victims in the devastated areas but also ran a clothes and food drive and along with the Lakehurst First Aid they opened their doors so that the residents of Lakehurst could take a hot shower, have a hot cup of coffee and recharge not only their cell phones and laptops, but themselves as well. Way to step up and show what Lakehurst is made of. By the way folks both the Fire Department and the First Aid …

Two brothers with addresses in Lakehurst and Jackson are jailed in lieu of bail after police said they got into a fight on Route 70. Lakehurst police arrested John R. Czajkowski, 28, and Christopher Czajkowski, 27, after witnessing John Czajkowski pulling his brother from a moving car at 4:10 p.m. Nov. 8, Chief Eric Higgins said in a release. Sgt. Ronald Heinzman and Patrolman Jeffrey Emmons arrived to find a 2003 Mazda wagon crashed into a snowbank but still in gear, with John Czajkowski trying to remove Christopher Czajkowski, the driver, by force as he tried to back the Mazda out of the snow, Higgins said. Emmons attempted to place John Czajkowski under arrest but the passenger became combative, Higgins said, forcing the officers to …

Green Leaf Asian restaurant now open on Union Avenue
Mike Lin grew up on Long Island, going to school and working part time in his family's Thai restaurant. The family hired a chef from Thailand, who taught Lin everything he knew about Thai cooking. "Mike really enjoyed it," said Patti Sloan, manager of Green Leaf Asian Restaurant in Lakehurst. "When the chef retired, Mike went on his own, and that's when he opened Green Leaf." Green Leaf, located in downtown Lakehurst, opened in late August and has gotten a great response from the surrounding community, Sloan said. "They wanted to bring something different here," she said. "Some people know the food, some people try it, like it and because it's good they tell their friends and come back." Sloan said Lin, along with two helpers in the …

Tipperary Pub opened at the former Center Ice location on June 19
When long-time friends Mark Callazzo and Ray Perez of Toms River, Al Coladonato of Freehold and Steve Silverstein of Monroe met up again for their weekly golf games earlier this year, they discussed their shared love of good food and drink and determined they needed to open their own place. So, when the land and liquor license for the old Center Ice Sports Bar and Grill on Route 547 in Manchester became available, Callazzo, a Lakehurst real estate agent, said he excitedly called his buddies. "Whenever we go out to an Irish pub, we have a great time," Callazzo said. "But there were none in the area." The building had been vacant for three years after the Center Ice closed and was in a state of disrepair. The owners went under contract and …

Lakehurst was considered for county seat
There is a reason the Manasquan River is the border between Ocean and Monmouth counties. Prior to 1850, most of Ocean County was actually part of Monmouth County. People south of the Manasquan were not pleased with the amount of time it took to receive funding for their roads, bridges, and other services; they also felt their northern counterparts were overall treated better and getting more for their tax dollars. The sensible solution was to form a new county with a more accessible government. On Feb. 15, 1850, Ocean County was formed from the southern part of Monmouth (It would also take a bit from Burlington in 1891 when Little Egg Harbor joined). Toms River became its county seat, beating Lakehurst by only one vote, and construction of…
