When the officers arrived, the man, 21-year-old Kenneth Funk of Manchester, was leaving the Route 70 parking lot on foot, Heinzman said. Police found "numerous" pieces of drug paraphernalia at the scene, Heinzman said. When the officers told Funk he was being arrested, the man allegedly "became uncooperative with the officers and attempted to resist arrest," Heinzman said. Residents can sign up for the system online
Lakehurst police now have another way to stay in contact with residents, as the department has joined the web-based Nixle alert service. Residents can register for the free service either through the Nixle website or the Lakehurst Police Department's home page, according to Chief of Police Eric Higgins. "The Lakehurst Police Department intends for Nixle to be an additional source of information for residents of Lakehurst," Higgins said. "Nixle will also be utilized to inform residents of safety tips, information about important events, details about traffic issues, and for the distribution of news releases." Users will be asked for their name, address, email address and cell phone number at the time of registration. Additional addresses …

Manchester schools already closed Thursday and Friday
A portion of downtown Lakehurst is without power Wednesday night after a transformer explosion on the eastern end of Union Avenue. The area near Brown Avenue is in the dark, as is the traffic signal on Route 70 and Orchard Street, said Chief of Police Eric Higgins, as a Nor'easter dropped snow most of Wednesday afternoon and into the evening in Ocean County. The transformer was damaged during Hurricane Sandy and had not been repaired by JCP&L crews, Higgins said. The utility reports that 5 percent of its 1,260 Lakehurst customers are without power Wednesday night. No surrounding structures were damaged but some residents across the street from the transformer were evacuated from their homes, according to the chief. Lakehurst police have …

Generator was used by Comcast to power internet and cable television connections
Lakehurst police have issued an arrest warrant for the man accused of stealing a Comcast generator used to power Internet and cable television signals in Hurricane Sandy's wake. After a "thorough" investigation, Officer Matthew Kline signed a complaint against borough resident Ramon A. Lugo, 33, charging that he stole a Comcast generator that was chained to a Lilac Street telephone pole on Saturday, Nov. 3, Chief of Police Eric Higgins said in a statement. "The generator was supplying power to the Internet and cable feed to residents of the borough, including the Internet to the Lakehurst Police Department which is needed to access state and federal law enforcement databases," Higgins said. The chief said that nearby residents were …

Charges were issued last week at Pinehurst Estates
A Lakehurst teenager faces burglary and theft charges after police alleged that a resident caught him in the act of stealing from a United States service member. Borough police were called to a residence in the Pinehurst Estates, an off-base military housing complex, on Oct. 5 on a report of burglary to a vehicle, said Sgt. Ron Heinzman in a statement. "Upon arrival to the area, a resident advised he saw a male subject inside his father's vehicle and when he approached him, [the suspect] turned over a military medallian that he was going to take from the car," Heinzman said. Officers Matthew Kline and Robert Seiden developed a description of the suspect and located him, a 17-year-old, in a Pinehurst Estates residence, Heinzman said. The …
Lakehurst police charge a man with multiple addresses after they said he took a down payment but didn't complete job
Lakehurst police last week arrested a man with addresses in Ocean and Monmouth counties, alleging he is an unlicensed home improvement contractor who never completed work for a borough resident. Patrolman Jeffrey Emmons began an investigation when a Geneva Road resident said that Kenneth E. Wilson, 46, with addresses in Howell, Toms River, Browns Mills and Seaside Heights, took a down payment in August but never built a rear deck, said Sgt. Ron Heinzman in a statement. "The defendant failed to return calls to the victim and even had another person who was apparently unaware that there was an underlying home improvement (theft) issue cash the check for him," Heinzman said. Emmons arrested and charged Wilson on Oct. 5 with third-degree …

Two Ocean County men face drug charges after Lakehurst police "surprised" them by showing up in a back yard while they allegedly smoked marijuana Friday night. The two men were found by police allegedly passing around a marijuana cigarette in the back yard of a Pine Street home that they were visiting "without the home owners' knowledge," said Lakehurst Police Sgt. Ronald Heinzman in a statement. Police originally were dispatched to the area of Pine and Center Streets at about 8:30 p.m. to investigate possible drug sales and use. As the two men, Dezmond N. Christensendabney, 18, of Manchester, and Antonio Thomas Jr., 18, of Toms River, allegedly were smoking the marijuana, "Officer Matthew Kline walked through a break in the fence from a …

Officials decided to repurpose car rather than buy a new vehicle
With the elimination of Lakehurst's business administrator position, the car that once went along with the job has been converted for police use in an effort to save money. The vehicle, a 2007 Dodge Charger, has traveled only about 17,000 miles and was used lightly during its years of service, said Chief of Police Eric Higgins. Since the borough eliminated the business administrator position in January, repurposing the car for police use was an attractive option. "We actually saved about $20,000," Higgins said. All the department needed to do was outfit the car, which Higgins said was originally purchased as a police package vehicle "in the sense that it had the suspension and everything like that," with law enforcement trappings. When …
