Lakehurst students to make up six days lost due to Hurricane Sandy

Due to the interruption in the current school year from superstorm Sandy, students in Lakehurst will be seeing the insides of their classrooms for six more days than originally scheduled, according to the Lakehurst Board of Education. “We put out a survey to our staff giving them two options for the makeup of the six days that were lost due to Mother Nature. Hopefully, she doesn’t give us any more, so we’re going to be approving a new calendar this evening for the remainder of the school year,” board President JoAnn Septor said Tuesday night. Storm Knocks Out Power in Lakehurst, Forces Thursday School Cancelation

Manchester schools already closed Thursday and Friday

A portion of downtown Lakehurst is without power Wednesday night after a transformer explosion on the eastern end of Union Avenue. The area near Brown Avenue is in the dark, as is the traffic signal on Route 70 and Orchard Street, said Chief of Police Eric Higgins, as a Nor'easter dropped snow most of Wednesday afternoon and into the evening in Ocean County. The transformer was damaged during Hurricane Sandy and had not been repaired by JCP&L crews, Higgins said. The utility reports that 5 percent of its 1,260 Lakehurst customers are without power Wednesday night. No surrounding structures were damaged but some residents across the street from the transformer were evacuated from their homes, according to the chief. Lakehurst police have …

Lakehurst School District Will Reopen Tuesday

Elementary school originally was set to remain closed until Nov. 12

Reversing a decision to remain closed until Nov. 12, educators announced that the Lakehurst School District will reopen on Tuesday, Nov. 6. The borough's elementary school will open on a 90-minute delay Tuesday, Superintendent of Schools Jill Dobrowansky said. No breakfast will be served, but lunch will be available.  Wednesday will be a regular, full day of school for students. Though originally scheduled to be closed on Thursday and Friday for the New Jersey Education Association convention, Lakehurst students will have class those days though they will be dismissed at 12:25 p.m. Breakfast will be available, but there will be no lunch or transportation, Dobrowansky said. Back to School Nights Kick Off Thursday

Whiting Elementary School will host parents on Thursday

Back to school nights in Manchester will kick off on Thursday, when parents of Whiting Elementary School students are invited to get to know their child's teacher. Beginning at 6:30 p.m., parents of Whiting students can "visit their child’s school, meet teachers and find out about daily classroom routines and expectations," according to a statement on the district's website.  All back to school nights begin at 6:30 p.m., except for Regional Day School.
