Lakehurst among the fire companies that helped with recovery efforts on New Jersey's coast
"It's devastating." Having spent two days helping with recovery and rescue efforts in Seaside Heights, Lakehurst Volunteer Fire Company Chief Ed Seaman needed few words to describe Hurricane Sandy's destruction. About 10 members of the borough's fire department rose to the call when the barrier island community needed assistance. They left at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29 and didn't return to Lakehurst until 10:30 p.m. the following day. Lakehurst was able to provide a unique asset to recovery efforts — the fire company has what Seaman called an "off-road high water fire unit." Locally, only Lakehurst, Cassville and the state police have such a vehicle. "They called our truck out for a resource," said First Capt. Brian Dugan. Sandy mostly …
Warming center at fire department will be open through Sunday
Lakehurst Elementary School will not open until Monday, Nov. 12, Superintendent of Schools Jill Dobrowansky announced Friday. "After speaking with the local authorities, the Lakehurst School District will remain closed throughout next week," she said in an email to Patch. Student safety was a concern in reopening the downtown Lakehurst school, the superintendent has said. Electric wires are down and borough police on Friday warned that some less secure lines could fall if wind picks up, according to police. "I need to ensure that our students can safely get to school since we are a walking district," Dobrowansky said Thursday. Anyone who sees a downed wire in Lakehurst is asked to call the police department at 732-657-7811. Manchester …

Heat, coffee and cell phone charging stations will be available
With power outages remaining widespread on Thursday, officials in Manchester and Lakehurst are taking steps to help residents keep warm. Manchester Township Elementary School on Colonial Drive will open its doors Thursday morning to give powerless residents an escape from their unheated homes. JCP&L reports that 63 percent of its customers in the township remain without power, a number that is slowly dropping. "We're considering it a warming station," said Chief of Police Brian Klimakowski. "It's not a shelter. It's a place to get warm – there will be chargers for cell phones and coffee." It was initially announced that the township's high school would host the center, but officials moved the location to the elementary school. Klimakowski …
