A Patch letter to the editor
The following column was submitted by New Jersey Department of Health Commissioner Mary E. O'Dowd: As New Jerseyans continue to rebuild and recover from Superstorm Sandy, mold and its remediation have become a challenging issue for many residents and communities. It can cause property damage and be a health concern when it grows inside homes and is not properly dealt with. Exposure to mold can cause coughing or wheezing as well as irritation of the eyes, nose, throat and skin. To help homeowners ensure that their residences are cleaned and remediated properly, the New Jersey Department of Health created and released a pamphlet entitled Mold: Guidelines for New Jersey Residents. This pamphlet can help residents identify mold in their homes…

Dear Editor: [Monday] morning at about 8:30 a.m., some anonymous man dropped off an entire file of newspaper clippings that appear to be a collection covering at least the entire past year and from many different newspapers. Attached to the front of the file was a note which in large print read "Band of Brothers" and "Unionism No. 1 Problem" followed by a list of complaints and signed "Thank you Mr. Tax Payer." Mr. "Tax Payer," about 99 percent of the material in the file has nothing to do with the governing of Manchester Township. I have said on many occasions if an individual wants to discuss any issue, call my office, make an appointment and come in and talk to me. I pay little or no attention to anonymous letters. Sincerely, Michael …

The following was authored by Manchester Mayor Michael Fressola in response to questions a reader posed to him in a recent letter to the editor. To Manchester Patch: An individual using the phony name "Manchester Man" commented about my letter you published on 11/11/12. Let me address each and every one of his comments. He questioned why I indicated that I was a republican. The answer is very obvious. Even though I am a Republican, I resent the local Republican Club interfering in our nonpartisan election. I will be happy to tell this individual that despite the loss of power, I was in Town Hall every day of the three days we were without power, meeting with our Police Chief and our leader of our Office of Emergency Management and his aide…

The following letter written by Manchester First Aid and Rescue Squad Publicity Officer Edward C. Lynch was sent to 10th Legislative District Assemblymen Dave Wolfe and Greg McGuckin, calling on them to take action to table a bill which revises emergency medical service delivery requirements. As my Assembly representative, please contact your colleagues on the Appropriations Committee and ask them to table A2463 when it comes before them on Monday, Sept. 24. I was very disappointed to see that the EMS bill (A2095) had been reintroduced as A2463 without addressing the issues raised by Gov. Christie in his conditional veto of A2095/S818 at the end of the last legislative session. It was especially disheartening to see that no impartial …

Sprinkler systems save lives, reduce risk to firefighters

Letter to the Editor submitted by David Kurasz, Executive Director of the New Jersey Fire Sprinkler Advisory Board: Tragedy struck Berkeley, N.J. on the early morning of September 9, 2012, when a quick-moving fire claimed the life of an elderly man reported to be in his seventies and injured one firefighter. Despite heroic efforts by the fire department and first responders, the fire grew too intense too quickly, making it difficult to enter the residence. New Jersey has seen an increase in the number of house and apartment fires recently. The results are often catastrophic property loss and in this case a tragic loss of life. However, these tragedies can be prevented. Properly installed and maintained fire sprinklers control and typically…

Hello Lakehurst, Well summer is over and so is the Lakehurst Farmer’s Market. I can’t believe 11 weeks came and went so quick. I am very proud to be part of The Lakehurst Revitalization Association. This group organized and ran the Farmer’s Market. I am truly going to miss our Sunday morning set ups with a cup of Lucky 7 coffee and breakfast sandwiches. There are a couple of groups I would like to acknowledge and thank for their help in ensuring the inaugural season was a success. The Lakehurst Revitalization Association for, well doing it all! All of the farmers and vendors, DJ Brian Dugan for some great music, the Lakehurst Fire Department, the Lakehurst First Aid, the Lakehurst Police Department and the Girl Scouts for helping out each …

The following is a response by Mayor Michael Fressola to Manchester Patch readers who left comments on his recent opinion letter outlining why Pine Lake may never be suitable for swimming. Fact No. 1 – 30 years ago people did all kinds of things they would not do today, including swimming in waters without knowing the conditions of the water. Fact No. 2 – The landfill was approved by the State in 1972 and is under the control of the State and the County and not under Township jurisdiction. Fact No. 3 – However, each and every concern was brought to the attention of the operators of the landfill by the Township. The issues they had control over were addressed. Fact No. 4 – The net dollars coming to the Township as “Host Community Benefits” …

Dear Editor: At a recent council meeting a resident brought up a question regarding Pine Lake. He asked if Pine Lake was polluted and if not, why swimming isn’t allowed. I will attempt to answer his questions. In November of 1935, a project was started on the Ridgeway branch of the Toms River to prevent the flooding of the town we now call Toms River, and parts of Berkeley Township. President Roosevelt approved an application to construct a dam and create a detention/retention facility, now called Pine Lake. The work was to be done by the W.P.A., the “Works Project Administration,” a work stimulus program developed to provide some relief from the job losses during the “Great Depression." The water detained/retained in Pine Lake originates …

Column as submitted by Ken Kobylowski, acting commissioner of the Department of Banking and Insurance, cautions consumers on how to avoid auto insurance fraud: In the aftermath of an auto accident, consumers are often faced with important decisions related to insurance, medical treatment and auto repair. Unfortunately if they make a hasty or unwise decision they can end up paying unnecessary expenses or becoming the victims of fraud. “Insurance fraud costs consumers and insurance companies millions of dollars every year,” said Acting Commissioner of New Jersey’s Department of Banking and Insurance Ken Kobylowski. “But if consumers exercise caution and follow some common sense measures after an auto accident, they can avoid fraud and …
A Manchester residents shares her thoughts on Community Medical Center's push for cardiac surgery

To The Editor: I have lived in Manchester for 18 years, and thought Mayor Michael Fressola would like to hear what I have learned both as a volunteer at Deborah Heart and Lung Center and also an in-patient there. Thus, my response to his letter to the editor this week about Community Medical Center's attempt to get a state license to perform cardiac surgery. Mayor Fressola, during the last eight years I have had numerous opportunities to interact with Deborah patients, and have experienced their gratefulness for the compassionate care they received, whether insured or uninsured. Mr. [Joseph P. Chirichella, President and CEO of Deborah Heart and Lung Center] suggested that it would be better for all of us if Deborah and Community …
