Roadway closed in both directions for several hours near Fairfield Street
A 1999 Chrysler Sebring Convertible struck a utility pole on Route 571 in Manchester early Sunday morning, causing injuries to the driver and shutting down the roadway for several hours. The vehicle was operated by 21-year-old Shantel Smith from South Toms River, police said. The vehicle was traveling east on Route 571 near Fairfield Street when it left the roadway and struck the utility pole, snapping it in two at approximately 1:13 a.m., according to Manchester police. The vehicle came to rest in the east bound travel lanes facing west after the crash, police said. The driver of the vehicle was reported to be wearing her safety belt at the time of the crash. Bayville woman charged with DWI, possession of CDS
A Bayville woman was charged with driving while intoxicated after her vehicle struck a utility pole on Route 530 in Manchester Township at 7:58 p.m. Saturday, shutting down the county road for hours. A 2003 Lexus RX300, driven by 42-year-old Maria F. Torre, left the roadway and struck a utility pole stationed along the westbound section of Route 530 near Columbus Boulevard, according to Police Captain Lisa Parker. Torre suffered a minor injury and was transported by Quality Medical to Community Medical Center for further treatment. There were no other vehicles or persons involved in the crash, police said. Friday event will honor Lakewood officer Christopher Matlosz; Monday ceremony will honor Manchester officer Robert Tobias
Families and the public will have the opportunity to honor local officers killed in the line of duty during two ceremonies beginning on Friday and continuing next week. On Friday, the names of two officers will be added to the police memorial monument at the Ocean County Police Academy in Lakewood; on Monday, May 9, bicyclists will ride in honor of a fallen Manchester officer. Lakewood officer and Manchester resident Christopher Matlosz, who was allegedly killed by Jahmell Crockam on Jan. 14, and Ocean Gate officer Jason Marles, who died following a crash on the Garden State Parkway on Nov. 25, will be added to the monument. Two firefighters were honored Monday by Manchester's mayor and town council for rescuing two house fire victims from a Pine Lake Park residence in January. Fireman Pablo Martinez and junior member Steve House, members of the Manchester Volunteer Fire Co., were presented with Meritorious Service Awards for saving Robert Rankin, 50, and Rosemary Rankin, 48, after their Commonwealth Boulevard residence went up in flames on Jan. 29. As part of negotiations, the police department pay scale will introduce more steps to save nearly $1 million, according to officials
The Manchester Township Council on Monday passed an ordinance that will implement the job-saving salary changes agreed to in January between township officials and the local police union. Last December, budget cuts threatened officer layoffs at the Manchester Police Department. The township and PBA Local 246 renegotiated the contract, saving jobs and nearly $1 million. The ordinance approved on April 25 implements those changes, including a reworked pay scale and elimination of longevity raises based on years of continuous service. "We stretched out the number of years it will take to get to those grades," said Elena Zsoldos, township business administrator. Department looking to hire officers to replace those retiring in 2011
Manchester's police department is inviting those interested in becoming full-time officers to apply for its physical fitness test, the first stage of the hiring process. The department began accepting applications for its physical fitness test on April 6 and will continue to register those interested until May 4 at 3 p.m., according to Capt. Lisa Parker. The application fee to participate in testing procedures is $75. Applicants must appear in person to sign up at the police department headquarters located in the municipal complex at 1 Colonial Drive. First reports of damaged vehicles came on March 19
Manchester Police are asking for the public's help after 11 more vehicles were damaged by thrown rocks in the Pine Lake Park section of town overnight Monday. The latest incidents come about two weeks after the first reports of damaged cars in the neighborhood. According to Manchester Police Capt. Lisa Parker, police are now investigating at least 16 reports of criminal mischief to motor vehicles after 11 more automobiles were targeted between the evening of March 28 and the morning of March 29. "The majority of the vehicles were struck with large rocks which resulted in damage estimated at approximately $500 for each vehicle," Parker said in a press release. "Vehicles were parked and unoccupied, and appear to have been random targets." …
