The Manchester students built the robots and competed in several competitions with other area schools.
Hilltop Nursery School's indoor pool is usually filled with pre-school children learning to swim, but on a few recent afternoons it was overtaken by underwater robots operated by students from the Manchester Township Middle School and High School Robotics Club. The clubs were formed thanks to a $7,000 STEM grant from NAVAIR Lakehurst, which provided the kits for the robots and other support materials. The students built the robots and competed in several competitions with other area schools.

Manchester Twp. Educational Foundation makes $25K donation and pledges to raise another $25K to help provide WiFi connectivity in all of Manchester's public schools.
The Manchester Township Educational Foundation (MTEF) is embarking on a campaign to help provide wireless internet connectivity at all of Manchester's public schools. MTEF recently donated $25,000 to the Manchester Township School District for the project and has set a goal of raising at least an additional $25,000 to bring the total to $50,000. MTEF President Ken Palmer, presented the initial $25,000 check to Board of Education President Donald Webster, Jr. On hand with Webster were Superintendent of Schools David Trethaway, Business Administrator Craig Lorentzen and Technology Coordinator Chip Conover. Students, staff and volunteers participate in Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser.
Manchester Township Elementary School raised nearly $16,000 - a record for the school - with their annual Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser on April 26, 2013. Students, staff and volunteers participated in the event, which supports the American Heart Association. The morning was filled with fun physical activities that were coordinated by Physical Education teachers, Mr. John Portuese and Mrs. Susan Dyer. Activities included the moon bounce, sack races, jumping rope and the hippity-hop ball. Stations were manned by parent volunteers. MTES has participated in Jump Rope for Heart for the past 15 years and has consistently been among the top fundraisers in the county and the state for this event. Participants plunged into Harry Wright Lake to raise money for the RDS prom and graduation luncheon.
The community came out to support Regional Day School at the Second Annual Penguin Plunge. Participants braved the icy waters of Harry Wright Lake in Whiting, raising $2300 to be used toward the RDS prom on May 24 and a luncheon for this year’s graduates and their families after the graduation ceremony on June 6. RDS Principal Lisa Michallis said that these are two memorable events for students. The event was organized by the Manchester Township Municipal Alliance. Plungers included district and school staff, parents, students, police officers and other community members. The day was relatively warm - in the high 50's - but the water was a chilly 49 degrees! Mrs. Ansbach is NJ Council of Teachers of English 2013 Outstanding Educator.
Mrs. Jennifer Ansbach of Manchester Township High School was honored by the Manchester Township Board of Education for being named 2013 Outstanding English Language Arts Educator by the NJ Council of Teachers of English. Principal Alex George introduced Mrs. Ansbach and read from a description of the award, which "recognizes a dedicated, innovative, dynamic educator whose activities have significantly and widely impacted New Jersey English language arts education." He said that Mrs. Ansbach would receive a medallion at an upcoming conference and would be featured on the NJ Council of Teachers of English website for the next year. BOE honors Derek Schmidt for taking first place in newspaper competition.
Derek Schmidt, a seventh grader at Manchester Township Middle School, was honored by the Manchester Township Board of Education for taking First Place for February 2013 in the Asbury Park Press Student Voices competition. Derek’s essay answered the question, “What do envision yourself doing 10 to 15 years from now?” His essay was published in both the print and online versions of the Asbury Park Press. Principal Nancy Driber said she was overwhelmed and excited when she found out Derek had won. “It is not an easy contest to win – there are many, many entries," she remarked. Free workshop April 17 at Regional Day School is open to the public.
The next meeting of the Regional Day School Parent Support Group will feature guest speaker Eva M. O’Malley, Founder, Coordinator and Certified Parent Instructor of CHADD (Children and Adults with Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder). Ms. O’Malley will be speaking about handling challenging behaviors of children with developmental disabilities. Local optometrist sponsors grant for project through Manchester Twp. Educational Foundation.
Regional Day School students recently worked with third graders from Manchestert Twp. Elementary School to make wooden eyeglass holders in the RDS shop. The cooperative project was made possible through a Manchester Twp. Educational Foundation (MTEF) Classroom Mini-Grant sponsored by Dr. Donna Malloy, of EyesFirst Vision in Manchester. The $470 grant was awarded to Jeffrey Bishop, Industrial Arts teacher at Regional Day School, to provide walnut boards for the project. Dr. Malloy serves on the MTEF Board of Directors and is the major event sponsor for their annual golf outing. Teacher gets taped to the wall in this fundraiser for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Every year, the Manchester Township Middle School Impact Club participates in the Pasta for Pennies fundraiser with proceeds donated to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. As part of this fundraising effort, this year they held a new event called Stick it to Cancer, that involved a staff member, Mr. Robert Morris, being stuck to the wall in the cafeteria. During the six lunch periods, students were invited to purchase a piece of duct tape at the cost of one dollar, and the tape was applied to Mr. Morris. At the end of the lunch periods, when the chair he was standing on was removed, Mr. Morris remained stuck to the wall! $160.00 was raised during the "Stick it to Cancer" event, with a total of $2,144.29 raised overall for the Leukemia & …
