Comcast: 144 Miles of New Infrastructure Since Sandy

Brick office receives more staff as summer influx expected; Ocean City office permanently destroyed, LBI office renovated

Comcast has said it has rebuilt 144 miles worth of cable infrastructure since Superstorm Sandy struck the Shore area and has hired extra staff for coastal area offices as an influx of seasonal customers is anticipated. Additional customer service employees and 170 extra technicians are to start work May 25, the company said in a statement this week. Additionally, at the company's offices in Brick, Absecon, Avalon, Northfield, Ocean City and Wildwood, the number of workstations "has been nearly doubled to provide more expedited, one-on-one attention for customers," the company said. The company's Long Beach Island office in Ship Bottom has been "completely renovated," while its Ocean City office was destroyed and is now operating out of two…

@A Resident. It was a long time ago (8-9 years ago) and only for a year. I don't think anyone else was "paying my share" rather I think Comcast operates on a high margin and there is room to haggle. I havn't had many service issues with them over the years. One thing I have learned with Comcast (or I guess any cable company) is if you have to "trim down" because your bill it too high it's best to…   more ›

County Expects to Distribute $200K in Sandy Aid

It is estimated that $940,000 in federal funds from CDBG and HOME programs will be dispersed to Ocean County municipalities and public agencies in 2013

Ocean County expects to distribute approximately $200,000 for Superstorm Sandy relief and recovery. The freeholders authorized the submission and execution of the county's Fiscal Year 2013 Action Plan Wednesday. The plan outlines recommended municipal projects and how funding will be allocated through the federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and how HOME programs will be distributed. It is estimated that $940,000 in federal funds will be dispersed to the county's municipalities and public agencies for housing rehabilitation and municipal and public service projects, a news release from the county said. “Many great projects have resulted from the distribution of these funds,” said Freeholder Gerry P. Little, liaison to the …

County Sees Growth in Gang Resistance Program

The entire seventh grade class of Lakewood Middle School and fifth grade students at the Walnut Street School in Toms River will soon graduate from the Gang Resistance Education and Training program

The G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training) program continues to grow throughout the county, as the Office of the Ocean County Prosecutor partners with law enforcement departments to prevent gang recruitment, Prosecutor Joseph D. Coronato said. “Law enforcement must take proactive measures to prevent the spread of crime and violence,” he said. “The G.R.E.A.T. program does that for those we hold most precious — our children.” G.R.E.A.T. is a curriculum instructed by law enforcement officers to prevent delinquency, violence and gang membership. Supervising Assistant Prosecutor Anthony V. Pierro and Sergeant Anthony Carrington pushed for the Prosecutor’s Office to be involved with G.R.E.A.T. in 2011. The program has since spread …

County to be Reimbursed $40M for Sandy Costs

Barnegat Bay will be open by Memorial Day Weekend

Ocean County expects to receive approximately $40 million in reimbursements for some services performed following Superstorm Sandy within a couple weeks. The project worksheets for just debris removal are in their final stages of approval and the county will be receiving a check soon, Administrator Carl Block said at the Board of Chosen Freeholders’ pre-board meeting. “There is movement,” Block said. The $40 million is just a fraction of the $60 million the county has put out for debris removal. The county paid for the services of AshBritt and Louis Berger Group Inc. upfront, for some municipalities. Once the county is reimbursed, municipalities will pay their share, Block said. Freeholder John C. Bartlett said fronting the money, without …

Freeholders Praise Outgoing, Incoming Prosecutors

Marlene Lynch Ford 'has set an example,' freeholder board member says

Ocean County Prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford is down to her last few days in her office in Toms River, and they've been spent showing incoming prosecutor Joseph Coronato the ropes. Both Ford and Coronato received high praise from the county's freeholder board at its meeting Wednesday. "I'm conflicted here, because I'm going to really miss you as a prosecutor, working with you and seeing what you've done," said Freeholder James Lacey, to Ford. "But I'm glad you found a home back on the bench." Ford, a Democrat, has been nominated as a Superior Court judge by Republican Gov. Chris Christie. She previously served a stint as a Superior Court judge before being named prosecutor. "Years ago … I admired you from afar, your legislative work," said …

VIDEO: Dunes Ravaged, But Future Looks Bright at Island Beach State Park

Barnegat Inlet shoaled at north jetty, an inside look shows

State officials announced the partial reopening of Island Beach State Park Friday, and and members of the press received an inside tour from park employees. Ray Bukowski, the park manager, said before the tour began that employees worked to remove tons of sand from the park's roads after Superstorm Sandy struck, and also pitched in to help the local South Seaside Park community recover as well. "One of the first things we did, as a park service, was to recognize that we're a part of this community," said Bukowski. "We still have people who work here who are out of their homes." Bukowski said the Fisherman's Walkway and several of the park's pavilions will be "very large ticket items," but officials have already met with FEMA as well as the…

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Set for This Week

County expanding program in the wake of Superstorm Sandy

Ocean County residents will be able to drop off household hazardous waste this week at several locations countywide. The county traditionally holds household hazardous waste collections in the fall and spring, but expanded the program this year in the wake of Superstorm Sandy. "In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy and with so many homes having suffered water damage resulting in houses being emptied out in order to begin repairs, there is need for these additional collection days,” said Freeholder James F. Lacey in a statement Monday. "All those aerosol cans, cleaning products and a host of other products that were under sinks and in garages and basements can be dropped off at the county’s collection sites starting in December." The …

I hope there will be some sort of DPW or recycling attendants or police/fire there or I see a big disaster in the making at the Brick High School. If people couldn't even obey a state of emergency and traffic ban, then I can only imagine the toxic mess that will happen at the high school with people dumping dangerous chemicals haphazardly over there! The number one way to fight any disaster is …   more ›

Week in News: Rebuilding the Jersey Shore

Check out the stories you may have missed this week from our Patch neighbors.

Point Pleasant- Jonathan Miller and Megan Baglivio from the Point Pleasant First Aid and Emergency Squad never expected to be on the Ellen DeGeneres TV show, much less to leave the set with the gift of their lives. The two volunteers, from "Point Beach EMS," the squad that serves Point Pleasant Beach, Bay Head and Mantoloking, are getting their flooded home gutted and made over by Kitchen Cousins, professional home remodelers, thanks to the generosity of DeGeneres. Read more on Point Pleasant Patch. Lavalette- Charlie Lord has seen his share of storms come through the Jersey Shore. The 55-year resident of Lavallette remembers '62. He remembers the Halloween storm of 1991, the Perfect Storm, the December 1992 nor'easter that tore up much of…

Nonprofits, faith-based communities and volunteer groups are invited to participate in a Long Term Recovery Committee that the Ocean County Department of Human Services is convening. The Committee will meet from 8 a.m. to noon Nov. 19 at the Holiday Inn, 290 Route 37 E., Toms River, to "focus on Ocean County needs resulting from the impact of Sandy," according to an email from Ryan Reilly, the coordinator of the Human Services Advisory Council. "Ocean County's intention is not to take over the work of these agencies but to promote a formalized and unified effort. Ocean County is aware of the amazing outpouring of donations and volunteers that have come to help in its time of need; our aim is to ease efforts, not duplicate efforts, and …
