Disabled College Student Works to Improve Lives of Others With Technology

OCC second year student Nick Tyler to continue studying computer science after graduation this month

When Nick Tyler graduates from Ocean County College in Toms River, N.J. later this month, he'll do so with a dual mission in mind: continue his computer science studies at Kean University, then use his programming skills to make life easier for those with disabilities. For his efforts, Tyler has been chosen as Huffington Post's Greatest Person of the Day. Tyler, of Brick Township, N.J., relies on technology to help him navigate life on a daily basis to a much greater extent than most people. He was born with quadriplegic cerebral palsy, which has resulted in his having limited control of his arms and legs, as well as his voice. "Since my muscles are affected, I have a difficult time being understood," he said, through a voice synthesizer …

OCC Pursuing Tourism Degree Partnership With FDU

Ocean County students could start degree program close to home

Ocean County College officials are hoping to forge an agreement with Fairleigh Dickinson University that will allow students to begin the process of earning a degree in Tourism and Hospitality locally. "We currently do not have a degree, per se, in hospitality and tourism," said Dr. Jianping Wang, President of Academic Affairs. OCC has been in talks with FDU to allow students to take the first two years of a hospitality and tourism program in Toms River, then transfer to FDU at a significant discount. FDU's hospitality and tourism program is number four in the nation, said Wang, "but their tuition is also very high." With room and board, tuition and fees top $40,000 per year at the Teaneck-based school. Under a potential partnership plan, …

OCC Custodians: 'Don't Outsource Our Jobs'

College considers taking custodial services private

Custodial workers at Ocean County College on Tuesday called on the institution's Board of Trustees to reconsider a plan to eliminate their jobs and hire an outside contractor. "We have committed our lives and our careers at this college," said Thomas Zaborowski, who works the night shift. "We planned to end our careers here until last Wednesday when the rumors were confirmed." Zaborowski said the college privatizing custodial services won't mean "better labor," but will negatively affect the lives of long-time employees and their families. "I've been here for four years, two years as a reservist," said Ellen Parashis, another custodial employee who often works at night. "I couldn't wait to work here full time. I'm proud to be here." "You'…

Whatever - Read the story again. The "fat cats" are not eliminating the positions. They are substituting them with a less expensive alternative to the taxpayer. THAT is their job. NJ is rife with the overpayment of administrator's salaries and that is an argument for another day. Just look at the nearly 600 public school districts this small state funds. Look at merely the coaching contracts at …   more ›

OCC Professor Finds Afghanistan Duty A Learning Experience

Benny Castillo reflects on a year spent teaching Afghans how to police their country

Benny Castillo says he has developed a new respect for the way Jersey drivers handle themselves on the roads. While we have issues with road rage and people driving like they need to get where they’re going yesterday, there is, on some level, rules that everyone follows, he says. That was definitely not the case in Afghanistan, where Castillo, an assistant professor of criminal justice at Ocean County College and former dean of its School of Social Science and Human Services, spent a year’s leave of absence from the college, trying to help train Afghans to be police officers in their country, and help bring some peace and stability to that war-torn country. “Over there, I saw stoplights but they were never on,” said Castillo, who retired …

College Drive, Fischer Boulevard Traffic Changes in Early Design Stages

County receives OK on wetlands permits but construction more than a year away

There may come a day where you’ll no longer be able to turn left from Fischer Boulevard to go south on Hooper Avenue. According to Frank Scarantino, Ocean County engineer, that day is a long way off. “Even if we built it tomorrow, it doesn’t mean we’d turn off the light tomorrow,” Scarantino said Tuesday. The county is in the process of designing improvements to the Fischer Boulevard and College Drive jughandles on Hooper Avenue to accommodate increases in traffic expected as a result of the Kean at Ocean partnership at Ocean County College. In April and again in August, residents of Squire Village, a housing development just south of OCC, received letters advising them of the county’s application to the Department of Environmental …

Kean University on Track to Come Off Accreditation Probation, OCC President Says

Follow-up inspection receives positive response from Middle States committee, Larson says

Kean University has passed "a significant hurdle" in its bid to be reaccredited, Ocean County College President Jon H. Larson told the OCC Board of Trustees on Monday. "It isn't done until it's done," he told the trustees, "but they are on a positive track." Kean, which is partnering with Ocean County College on a program called Kean@Ocean that will allow students to complete a bachelor's or a master's program while taking all of their courses at OCC's Toms River campus, was put on probationary accreditation status this summer by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education for failing to meet four of the commission's 14 standards. Kean, which began undergoing its most recent accreditation review last year, was put on probation in June…
