Where Is The Sheriff?

Longtime Ocean County Sheriff William L. Polhemus has been purposely kept out of the limelight long before Hurricane Sandy Hit

Flashback to August 2011. Ocean County Emergency Management officials and municipal coordinators from most of the 33 towns gathered at Robert J. Miller Airpark to discuss the rapidly advancing Hurricane Irene. Freeholder Joseph H. Vicari was at the dais, along with Capt. Michael A. Armstrong from the Ocean County Sheriff's Office, the late Undersheriff Wayne R. Rupert and a host of other officials. But one person wasn't there. The county's chief emergency management coordinator had been carefully excluded from the meeting. That's because - according to top sources - they didn't think Polhemus would be able to handle the press conference. The 84-year-old sheriff has been a no-show throughout much of 2012. There is another way to try to get rid of him. Next ballot have a referendum that will really stick out and maybe people will wake up. This is plain waste. The other approach would be to eliminate the entire department and spread the few jobs they do to other organizations already in place.   more ›

Polhemus Has Pocketed Nearly A Million In Pension Payouts From Seaside Heights

Polhemus, 84, is running for his tenth term as Ocean County Sheriff

Longtime Ocean County Sheriff William L. Polhemus has collected $929,793 in pension payments since he retired as Seaside Heights police chief back in the 1980s, according to a report by New Jersey Watchdog. Polhemus, 84, currently receives $165,941 a year — $122,669 in salary plus a $43,272 pension as a retired Seaside Heights police chief, the report states. "At age 84, Polhemus is the Republican nominee running for a tenth term, the report states. "If he wins, he’ll become a full-fledged, double-dipping pension millionaire." Longtime Ocean County Sheriff Faces Two Challengers In Bid For Tenth Term

84-year-old William L. Polhemus will run against Democrat Robert Armstrong and independent William McMenamin

Ocean County Sheriff William L. Polhemus will have to fend off two challengers in the race for the three-year term as the county's top law enforcement official. Polhemus, 84, received 20,409 votes or 99.4 percent of Republican votes cast in yesterday's primary. There were also 121 write-ins, according to the Ocean County Clerk's Office. He will go up against Democrat George "Bob" Armstrong and independent John McMenamin in the November election. Armstrong, 68, received 7,655 votes, or 99.6 percent of Democratic votes cast. There were also 24 write-in votes. He has more than 40 years in law enforcement. He has served as a Special Agent with U.S. Army Intelligence, the FBI and the U.S. Treasury. He retired as a Lt.
