Oceanfront homeowners between Manasquan and Barnegat inlets are being urged to sign easements necessary for a beach renourishment project to get off the ground by May 1, officials said Thursday. U.S. Rep Jon Runyan (R-3) wrote to the mayors of a number of northern Ocean County municipalities this week urging them to secure all necessary easements for the massive dune and beach project by May 1, the date the Army Corps of Engineers must submit a work plan to Congress. The project's design – which would include the construction of approximately 25-foot high dunes, 75 foot wide berms and 175 acres of dune grass in the project area – was completed in 2007, but has languished after some oceanfront homeowners refused to sign easements that would…

The Point Pleasant Beach fixture is one of several Jenkison's properties to reopen Friday.
A few feet past the welcome sign, the boardwalk, what’s left of it, is still cordoned off. In the opposite direction, in front of the rows of shops with their metal gates pulled down and locked, shielding the view of damaged insides, heavy machines rumbled along, redistributing sand along the beach. Things are moving in the right direction. They’ve got a responsibility, said Toby Wolf, Jenkinson's Marketing Director, standing in front of a shark tank at Jenkison’s Aquarium. Wolf said that as New Jersey’s shore towns make their recovery following Hurricane Sandy, the business community needs to be there to welcome the community back, let them know that, despite the destruction caused by the storm, the businesses are not going anywhere. On…

Participants are asked to bring candles to fisherman's memorial
A candlelight vigil for the victims of the Connecticut shooting victims will be held from 8 to about 9 p.m. today at the fisherman's memorial on Inlet Drive in Point Pleasant Beach. The vigil will be held rain or shine at the memorial at Loughran's Point on the Point Pleasant Beach side of the Manasquan Inlet and residents from all towns are welcome, said Kiel Arnone, a Point Pleasant Borough resident who is coordinating the event. All participants are asked to bring their own candles and any donations of candles from businesses will be greatly appreciated, Arnone said. The inlet parking lot will be closed to vehicular traffic at 7:30 p.m. so there is room for all participants to stand during the vigil, said Arnone, who coordinated the …

Despite assurances by Gov. Christie that the entire state would have power again by yesterday, there are thousands still in the dark in New Jersey, including 601 in just Monmouth and Ocean counties, according to the JCP&L outage map. As of 3:15 p.m. Monday, there are 441 outages in Monmouth and 160 in Ocean and about 3,100 outages among JCP&L customers in the 13 counties it serves, the map shows. In Morris County alone there are 739 JCP&L customers reporting outages. PSE&G has 278 outages on Monday afternoon, including 19 outages caused by Sandy and 259 caused by the nor'easter. Atlantic Electric has restored power to all customers who can safely be restored, said Frank Tedesco, company spokesman. He said there are 2,000 to 2,500 …

Police, fire and first aid work together to save a woman, a man and a boy
Point Beach police, fire and first aid responders worked in the cold, rising tide of the Manasquan Inlet waters Thursday night to save a woman and a boy who had tried to save her himself. Maureen Bush, 29, Manchester, fell between sharp, craggy rocks into the inlet water, and Daniel Reinhardt, 16, who had tried to save her, are both OK after being rescued by the emergency responders, said Police Detective Clint Daniel. "The 16-year-old boy was fantastic and should be commended," Daniel said at police headquarters Thursday night. "He tried to get her out, but it was just too slippery. Everyone worked together and did a great job." Daniel said the incident should be a wake-up call to everyone to never go on the inlet rocks, which are …

County tourism department says area amusements and attractions not among those hard hit
Come visit. We’re here and open. That’s the message the Ocean County Tourism department was pushing in the days between Hurricane Irene’s retreat and Labor Day’s onset. No, the boardwalks are not destroyed. All attractions and amusements are open, to attract and amuse you. Ocean County Tourism and Public Affairs Director Barbara Steele said tourism offices have been flooded with callers wanting to verify that there’s a boardwalk to come to. She assures you, we are open. Ocean County is open for business. “In Ocean County, virtually everybody in the tourism areas tell me they are up and running. I'm not sure how Mother Nature selected what she was going to hit the hardest, but I do know we fared better than most in our tourism areas along …

Clubs, bars, and cover charges for popular Seaside Heights and Point Pleasant Beach summer destinations.
Often, you pay to get in. That's the situation at Jersey Shore's bars and clubs, where a cover charge is an upfront cost even before you spend more of your money inside on drinks and bar food. Rather than spending too much to fistpump or have your elbows stick to every bar top on the boardwalk, here is a list of the cover charges for some of the most popular nightlife destinations in Seaside Heights and Point Pleasant. A lot depends on the night and venue. Some places proudly have no cover charge no matter what day of the year it is, while you can expect to fork over $20 to get in to other places on a busy night. Jenks: Open year round, Jenks Club offers more than just a popular lunch spot for MTV's Snooki and Deena. The Point Pleasant …
