Tent City to Close; Residents Will Receive Year of Housing

Camp to close, residents to get housing as part of consent agreement reached Friday afternoon

Residents of Tent City will be given housing for at least a year as part of a consent agreement that will also allow for the permanent closure of the Lakewood tent encampment. Superior Court Judge Joseph Foster announced the arrangement after meeting behind closed doors with representatives for Ocean County, Lakewood Township and Tent City for about two hours Friday. Left unresolved, however, is a pending lawsuit against Ocean County and the Ocean County Board of Social Services by Ocean County's homeless and the Atlantic City Rescue Mission. A hearing on that suit, which calls on the county to provide shelter for the homeless within the county, will occur May 3 and, if not resolved, will go to trial on Aug. 19. Lakewood had sued Tent City…

Protesters Show Support for Tent City Homeless Camp Ahead of Hearing

Two dozen protesters marched outside of the Ocean County Courthouse Friday afternoon

About two dozen protesters marched outside the Ocean County Courthouse on Hooper Avenue, many holding signs that said "Speak for the Homeless" and "Save Tent City." They were outside to make their voices heard before a hearing on the fate of the Tent City encampment before Superior Court Judge Joseph Foster on Friday afternoon. The encampment has triggered passionate responses on both sides of the issue and has been the subject of court review for more than a year. Outside, some were residents of the Tent City homeless camp, others were from advocacy groups like HELP and Clergy for Workforce Housing. "For me, it's a personal issue," said Marilyn Miller of Toms River. "As a child, I was almost homeless many times but for the grace of god." …

Mr. B, I'm sure the vast majority of your residents have a drug, alcohol or mental health issue and are not serious about doing anything about it even though there are are plenty of resources available. Your camp has made them comfortable. I'm tired of hearing "we don't do enough". I do believe a real shelter is needed. One large building staffed 24/7 with workers, security, programs or …   more ›

It's unclear who you think you're fooling, Lee, but it's certainly not us. You don't work hard. You know it and I know it and everyone who knows you knows it, so why claim otherwise? Be honest with yourself. OWN the fact that you're a privileged, lazy, selfish person. Just don't pass those traits on to your children. Please, for the good of all of us, teach them that you are NOT the example they …   more ›

Welfare does not offer all the help you think they do. Be realistic. You do not know any of these people, circumstances, or backgrounds. Circumstance dictates choices. Living in the "Brick area" especially after the storm, there are not many places hiring for jobs and normally its seasonal. Most of these people do not have phones to get calls back, and section 8 is very hard to get. The waiting …   more ›

Homeless in Lakewood Tent City Can Stay During Court Proceedings

Lakewood township wants the homeless to leave their camp

Those living in a makeshift camp in Lakewood can stay for now while homeless advocates and township officials settle eviction proceedings in court, a judge ruled on Friday. Superior Court Judge Joseph Foster said that, while the current living situation is not sustainable, he would not order the homeless to abandon the Tent City camp, NJ.com reported.  Lakewood officials want to clear the area of its homeless population, who they have said are living illegally on public land. The Huffington Post reported that advocates for those living in the camp near Cedar Bridge Avenue maintain that Ocean County is required by state law to provide shelter for the homeless. Jeffrey Wild, an attorney fighting the township, said that the camp is an "…

Freeholders Advised Against Meeting With Homeless Advocates

County counsel: Elected officials can talk if 'Tent City' lawsuit is dropped

Ocean County freeholders will not be meeting privately with advocates for the local homeless population so long as "Tent City" litigation is pending against the county. A dismissal of the suit filed on behalf of the homeless encampment in Lakewood's residents would enable the board's members to collaborate on potential solutions, however. "From my perspective, if the individuals who filed the lawsuit are willing to dismiss the complaint... that would certainly clear the way and give us an avenue to sit down and have discussions," said county counsel John C. Sahradnik at the freeholders' regular meeting Wednesday. Sahradnik shared his advice to freeholders in response to questioning by Larry Meegan, the president of the Kiwanis Club of …

Advocates Plead on Behalf of Ocean's Homeless

Speakers press Board of Freeholders to do more for displaced residents

Advocates for the homeless delivered a clear message Wednesday to the Board of Freeholders: Ocean County must do more to help its most vulnerable residents. A standing-room-only crowd packed the freeholders' regular meeting in the county Administration Building to plead for new solutions to the plight of the homeless, arguing for the establishment of a trust fund, among other measures. Activists held supportive signs as speakers shared their stories and asked for greater cooperation with the county freeholders. Homelessness is a "social justice issue," argued Larry Meegan, the president of the Kiwanis Club of Jackson. "A lot of people are slipping through the safety net." "This problem must be addressed by all of our energies," said the …
