Manchester Board of Education Approves Slight Tax Hike

Average increase will be about $14 over last year's rate.

The Manchester Township Board of Education has unanimously adopted a $51,518,475 budget for the 2013-2014 school year that will hike the average homeowner's tax bill about $14 over last year's rate. Superintendent of Schools David H. Trethaway and School Business Administrator Craig A. Lorenzen presented on the budget at the regular Board of Education meeting held last night. Lorenzen noted that there was an overall increase in the budget of 0.6 percent, or $292,000 overall. The fiscal plan would increase the school tax rate by about 26 cents, from $1.04 to $1.29, per $100 of assessed property value. The owner of a home assessed at the township average of $156,000 would pay an increase of $14.21 from last year’s tax bill. Trethaway said a …

Got hit with a $1400 dollar a year increase for 2013 and now this? We have got to get Mayor Mike out of office, He is out of touch with the average working family. He has done nothing for Manchester Twp except for the seniors. Has anyone ever looked into the last election results? Its odd that about 3000 more people voted than the previous election and Mayor Mike won by about 3000 votes, almost …   more ›

Lakehurst School District Opts to Preserve Relationship With Manchester

District decides against further exploring switching to Jackson after working out differences

The Lakehurst School District intends to preserve its sending-receiving relationship with Manchester schools after studying whether to move its students to Jackson. After a feasibility study and public meetings on the topic, members of the Lakehurst Board of Education announced Tuesday that it has worked out differences with Manchester and will retain the relationship for the foreseeable future. “Tonight, we’re bringing up our Jackson-Manchester issue that we have been researching. We had a feasibility study done, heard your concerns and questions. We have met with Manchester; they have heard our concerns and questions as well. We have had meetings with them, and they have offered us some new fees,” said board President JoAnn Septor. “I …

16 Years of Clean Audits for Manchester's School District

Audit presentation was given at the Oct. 17 regular school board meeting

For the 16th straight year, auditors have concluded that Manchester's school district has its finances in order. David Gannon, a partner at the Wiss and Company accounting firm, presented his findings from an audit conducted in June which again found that the district's financial reporting was accurate and met the standards for recognition from the Association of School Business Administrators International. "Every year we receive excellent cooperation from all of the employees in the district. This is the first engagement we start as a firm, it's the first report we send out as a firm and it's the first board presentation that is chosen," Gannon said last week when he presented the audit report to the Board of Education. The district was …

I get your point, but they have been getting these clean audits and awards over several different administrations now and for 16 years. And they do not use the same auditors as TR. I also have heard that Ritacco recommended his insurance buddies to other districts and at least the Manchester officials didn't bite on the sales pitch, unlike some other districts in Ocean and around the state. Following Feasibility Study, Lakehurst and Manchester School Officials Set to Meet

'Significant' increase in communications between districts since feasibility study was released, according to Lakehurst school board vice president

Education officials from Manchester and Lakehurst are set to meet Friday to see how they can better communicate with one another, according to the borough's school board Vice President. The meeting, during which the superintendents, business administrators and board of education presidents and vice presidents are set to meet comes days after Lakehurst school officials released the findings of a study they commissioned outlining the effects should the borough end a high school sending-receiving agreement with Manchester and switch to Jackson. "I can tell you after our presentation Tuesday night and our meeting with the Manchester Board of Education Wednesday, significant communication has reopened between Lakehurst and Manchester," …

Author: Tuition Rate Used in Lakehurst Feasibility Study May Be Adjusted

Author of report studying the impact of moving Lakehurst kids to Jackson responds to Manchester criticism of estimated cost savings

An author of a study for Lakehurst school officials that included a comparison of tuition rates in Manchester and Jackson has responded to a charge by Manchester's district that it unfairly compared costs. The tuition rate of $14,000 per student used in the Puleio and Strimple Associates and JP Savedoff and Associates school switch feasibility study was provided by Lakehurst administrators, as it is the estimated contracted rate between the districts for the 2012-13 school year, said study author Nicholas Puleio.  The study concludes that Lakehurst taxpayers would see a cost savings and possibly greater educational offerings if its students attended high school in Jackson, rather than Manchester. However, Manchester officials said the …

Hardwood Flooring Approved for Middle School Gym

Board members approved the flooring at its October regular meeting

A hardwood floor will replace the carpeting damaged by mold in Manchester Township Middle School's gym. Board of education members on Wednesday night voted in favor of replacing the school's iconic gym carpeting with wood. The $154,700 contract was awarded to Classic Sport Floors of West Berlin, the lowest bidder by $9,750.  Since installing hardwood flooring costs more than replacing the carpeting, it is likely that insurance will not cover the entire project and the district will pay the difference, said district Business Administrator Craig Lorentzen. "It's likely we'll get the replacement value for the carpet floor," Lorentzen said, adding that it was not clear what the price for carpet replacement would be.  The gym is one of many …

Lakehurst Parents Concerned School Switch Could Hurt Students

Board of Education members said public comment will help in their decision making

Lakehurst residents expressed concerns that their children and community may suffer if administrators decide to send high school students to Jackson instead of Manchester. The findings of a feasibility study commissioned by the borough's Board of Education was presented at the body's meeting Tuesday night. Though the study indicates that a switch from Manchester to Jackson could save Lakehurst residents on their tax bills without impacting education, many parents in attendance said that they are against the potential change.  "Let's not change something that's not broken," said Manapaqua Avenue resident Brenda Applegate, one of many who spoke against the possibility during the meeting's public comment portion. The 52-page report, prepared …
