Though Manchester's Township Council typically meets on the second and fourth Monday of each month, Oct. 8 isn't a typical day. It just happens to be Columbus Day, a federal holiday that commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World on October 12, 1492. So, council members will gather in the Municipal Complex courtroom on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 6 p.m. for their first of two regular meetings this month. Also notable is that Manchester and Lakehurst schools are closed to students, though staff will have an in-service day. Township offices and the U.S. Post Offices will be closed, but branches of the Ocean County Library — including Manchester's — will be open for normal business hours. Whiting woman's gallery is open to the public during September
Joan Mabry is not entirely sure where her love of art came from, but she believes that she was born with the desire to make it. “It has never been clear to me what the impulse to make art is, or where it comes from, but it seems to me both innate and essential,” she said during her artist statement this weekend at a reception celebrating her work at Manchester's branch of the Ocean County Library. Mabry was born in New Jersey and moved to Florida in 1982. Art was put on the back burner for many years while she raised her family. But now, Mabry is back in her native state — living in Whiting — and is being honored by the Friends of the Manchester Library with a public art display through September. Library honors winners of its summertime photo contest
Last Friday afternoon, the Manchester Branch of the Ocean County Library honored the award winners of a creative photo contest they held over the summertime, where entrants had to design photographs based around the titles of their favorite books. The contest was open to anyone in three separate age categories: 8-12 years old, 13-17 years old, plus 18 years old and older. However, no entries were received for the 13-17 year-olds group, so the winners were limited to those in the younger and older demographic categories. In order to be considered a valid entry for the contest, photos had to be submitted by Aug. 3, be digital prints measuring at least five inches by seven inches in size, and hold the same title as the book that the photo …

Seminar and screenings set to begin at 12:45 p.m. at Colonial Drive branch
Representatives from the Ocean County Health Department will pay a visit to Manchester's county library branch on Wednesday for a free health seminar and screenings. The Live Healthy Ocean County program, run by the health department, will perform blood pressure, stroke risk and osteoporosis screenings at the Ocean County Library Manchester branch from 12:45 to 2 p.m., according to library spokesman Lawrence Meegan. "High blood pressure, stroke and osteoporosis are health conditions that can be prevented by making lifestyle modifications," Meegan said in a news release.
