Administration rewards MTHS students with fun assembly after HSPA testing
Students at Manchester Township High School last week had their wits challenged when the annual standardized High School Proficiency Assessment tests challenged their minds and mixed up their schedules. Three days of testing, the administration said, can throw the students off. “The kids are accustomed to their routine,” said Connie Soper, an assistant principal at MTHS. Soper said that the the stresses of standardized testing can make students tired. So, once testing was complete, the school’s administration and PTA got together to give kids a breather with “The Brain Show” on March 4. “The Brain Show” is a live-action game show brought to the high school's auditorium by Magic Touch Entertainment. This was the second year the contest was…

A 21 Plus Home receives a much-needed addition
The sounds of chainsaws and hammers filled Manchester High School's shop on a Saturday morning, a day when students should be at home. But being at school on a weekend is a different story when it's for a special cause. In November, Anthony Ploumitsakos had to choose a project as part of his Eagle Scout requirements. A senior at Manchester Township High School and a member of Boy Scout Troop 350 in Manchester, Ploumitsakos decided to build a shed for a 21 Plus home funded by Habitat for Humanity. This project, he said, is close to his heart because of a family connection. "I chose this project because my uncle lives in one of these homes," Ploumitsakos said. The shed was built in one day on Feb. 19 and will be delivered on March 5. A group…

Copies of the Dec. 15 Manchester High School combined choral and band holiday concert are available for $10.
Those looking to relive every crescendo of the recent Manchester High School combined choral and band concert are in luck – DVDs of the performance are available for purchase. Principal Alexander George said that the groups' Dec. 15 performances were "fabulous" and a good way for hard-working students to show off the results of their daily practice on stage and in front of an audience. "I's always so neat to see the kids have an opportunity to perform and demonstrate, in a setting like this, what they do everyday," he said. DVD and VHS copies of the concert, available for $10 each, can be picked up at the high school's main office on Jan. 21. An order form was available at the concert and is also posted online. The performance marked the …

#11 Wall defeats #3 Manchester, 56- 54.
Propelled by junior Conor Mulholland's team-high 17 points, including four 3-pointers in the first quarter, the Wall Knights defeated the Manchester Hawks in a tight physical contest to advance to the WOBM Christmas Classic semifinals. The Knights were carried by their shooting from beyond the arc, sinking nine 3-pointers throughout the contest. The Hawks held a one point lead, 46-45, with five minutes remaining in the game before their offense hit a dry spell, allowing the Knights to take the lead for good on senior Kyle Janeczek's go ahead basket. Following De'Andre Little's basket at the five minute mark, Manchester would not score again until Devon Hodges hit two free throws with 1:33 left in the game. By this point Wall had …

Coach says team is still strong despite loss of injured senior.
With one-third of the season behind them, the Manchester Hawks boys varsity bowling team hoped to put their early season woes to rest against the Toms River North Mariners. "We're looking to avenge some of our losses. Some were painful," said Manchester Coach Bryan Vargas. Before play began, Vargas had hopes of repeating the 3-0 sweep of North that his Manchester squad achieved just weeks ago, but he admitted that the Hawk's opponent was a better team today. These games could go either way. "Neither team bowled to their potential," he said of their first meeting. "Either team could have easily lost. And North, they're improved since the first time we bowled against them." Coming into the Dec. 21 match, Vargas noted that his team has a …

Clutch late-game jumper secures Manchester victory
Halfway through the fourth quarter of their season opener, a Hawk's victory seemed likely. But their opponent, the Point Pleasant Boro Panthers, rallied, taking the lead with little time left. The Manchester squad fought until the end. With 3 seconds remaining in regulation, a go-ahead jumper by Hawk's senior Nate Nickens sealed his team's 32-31 victory during the Dec. 17 Shore Conference B-South match up. Manchester maintained the lead for most of the game, taking an early first quarter advantage in this low scoring defensive battle. Midway through the fourth quarter, the Hawks expanded their lead to eight, a margin that seemed almost insurmountable at that point with the defensive efforts being put forward by both teams. It was at then…

The Manchester High School SGA organized fundraiser
The $2,500 raised by Manchester High School students for Kevin's Kids during last week's Hawkapalooza was no surprise to Principal Alexander George. "The turnout has been spectacular," he said. "The kids have been looking forward to it." Money from ticket sales will be used to buy toys for less fortunate area children this holiday season. George expected the eighth annual event, in which students and teachers performed choreographed lip-sync routines, to be a big draw. "We sold close to 300 tickets in advance so we knew that it was really going to be a strong turnout. And it annually is," the principal said. "I think its a very caring community." Kevin's Kids was founded 28 years ago by Kevin Burger, a Manchester schools administrator, …
