Avon — Longtime Avon restaurateur Rob Fishman, owner of the Avon Pavilion, went to Borough Hall on Monday to show officials new blueprints for rebuilding the boardwalk mainstay. He left without a restaurant. Read more on Wall Patch Rumson — In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, those living along the Shrewsbury River in the hard-hit West Park section of Rumson rallied to sift through soggy debris, dry out their homes and rebuild. Foundation awards six grants to organizations in Sandy-battered communities
OceanFirst Foundation’s Relief and Recovery Grant Program is awarding six new grants totaling $93,000 to organizations in Point Pleasant Beach, Toms River and Monmouth County. The recipients are: Ocean Fire Co. #1, Point Pleasant Beach; Caregiver Volunteers of Central Jersey, Toms River; Children’s Home Society, Toms River; Homes for All, Toms River; O.C.E.A.N., Inc., Toms River and United Way of Monmouth County, Farmingdale. "The foundation's grant program assists the efforts of nonprofit organizations in the New Jersey shore market area that are helping local families and individuals affected by Hurricane Sandy," says a prepared statement issued by the foundation. Others have had no power at all for 10 days
Gov. Christie told a gathering on Long Beach Island on Wednesday that the coming Nor'easter and anticipated snowfall would likely cause "a setback" in the work underway for full power restoration. Boy, he wasn't kidding. JCP&L, on its website, is acknowledging that the nor'easter has created new outages, often for customers who were hit with outages in the height of Sandy's destructive path, had power restored and are now in the cold darkness yet again. "Late Wednesday, heavy, wet snow and high winds from the nor'easter resulted in approximately 120,000 additional power outages in the Jersey Central Power & Light service territory," says the JCP&L website. Still 74,012 in the dark in Ocean and Monmouth counties
There are currently 28,176 JCP&L customers without power in Ocean County and 45,836 without power in Monmouth County, according to an update on the JCP&L website. Those numbers change constantly as crews continue to work on outages throughout the region. However, the nor'easter starting to move into the area may cause new outages as well as coastal flooding, according to the National Weather Service. JCP&L, in a prepared statement, says: "Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) has restored power to more than 900,000 of the 1.2 million JCP&L customers affected by Hurricane Sandy, marking five consecutive days where crews have restored at least 100,000 customers per day. The National Weather Service warns there could be more power outages and further damage from lingering storm debris.
The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning and a coastal flood warning for our area Wednesday, as a "powerful nor'easter" moves up from the Carolinas. Though this storm is not expected to have near the magnitude of Hurricane Sandy,nor'easters can pose serious threats. Click here to learn more. The National Weather Service is predicting that areas significantly affected by Sandy last week will be more susceptible to high winds, citing the possibility of more downed trees and increased power outages. Gabrielle Hillman, a 21-year-old Belmar resident and St. Rose High School graduate found dead in her Pennsylvania college dorm room Monday, had a bright future ahead of her, according to those who knew her. Little Silver — A Little Silver man faces more than 20 years in prison and the forfeiture of millions in assets after being indicted in an alleged bribery and kickback scheme.
