Lakehurst Brothers Jailed After Drug-Influenced Fight on Route 70, Police Say

Officers saw man attempting to pull his brother from a car crashed into a snowbank after altercation

Two brothers with addresses in Lakehurst and Jackson are jailed in lieu of bail after police said they got into a fight on Route 70. Lakehurst police arrested John R. Czajkowski, 28, and Christopher Czajkowski, 27, after witnessing John Czajkowski pulling his brother from a moving car at 4:10 p.m. Nov. 8, Chief Eric Higgins said in a release. Sgt. Ronald Heinzman and Patrolman Jeffrey Emmons arrived to find a 2003 Mazda wagon crashed into a snowbank but still in gear, with John Czajkowski trying to remove Christopher Czajkowski, the driver, by force as he tried to back the Mazda out of the snow, Higgins said. Lakewood Woman Dies After Collision at Route 70, Massachusetts Ave. in Toms River

Second driver also injured in head-on collision

A Lakewood woman died before 2 p.m. Wednesday in a head-on collision at Route 70 and Massachusetts Avenue in Toms River. Marie Smith, 77, of Lakewood was westbound on Route 70 and attempted a left turn onto Massachusetts Avenue southbound when she collided head-on into an eastbound minivan, said Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy. Smith was transported to Kimball Medical Center in Lakewood where she succumbed to her injuries shortly after the accident, said the police chief. The eastbound driver, Jenna Hester, 24 of Toms River, was also transported to Kimball Medical Center. Beckerville Road East Reopened Following Morning Crash

Crews replaced utility pole after single car crash Tuesday morning

A portion of Beckerville Road closed to eastbound traffic following a single car crash that downed a utility pole Tuesday morning has since reopened.  The road was closed to through traffic from its intersection with Route 70 to Horicon Avenue following the 7 a.m. crash, according to Manchester Police Capt. Lisa Parker. No injuries were reported in the crash and local residents still were able to access their homes as a Verizon crew replaced the impacted pole. The scene was cleared at about 12:30 p.m., Parker said.   Further details on the crash were not immediately released by police.

Driver Indicted in Hit and Run, Head-On Crash That Killed Toms River Woman

Abel Hernandez-Betancourt, 28, faces charges of vehicular homicide, knowingly leaving the scene in fatal crash

The Lakewood driver who allegedly left the scene of a fatal head-on collision on Route 70 in December, killing a Toms River woman, has been indicted on a charge of vehicular homicide by an Ocean County grand jury. Abel Hernandez-Betancourt, 28, of Lakewood was indicted last week on two counts in the Dec. 17 crash that killed Jean McCarthy, 71, of Toms River, and seriously injured her husband, Edward McCarthy, 74. He faces one count of vehicular homicide on the charge of driving while intoxicated and causing Jean McCarthy's death, and one count of knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death. Crash with Diesel Truck Creates Fuel Spill at Whitesville, Route 70

Clean-up began around 6 a.m.

Police said a driver asleep at the wheel created a chain of events this morning that included a multi-car crash, fuel spill and disabled light stanchion. The incident began 6 a.m. Friday as Frank Favocci, 23, of Lakehurst drove westbound on Route 70 in a 2006 Infinity. Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy said Favocci reportedly feel asleep at the wheel and left the roadway, first striking a merge sign by the intersection with Whitesville Road. Mastronardy said Favocci next struck a truck that was in the process of exiting the Exxon Gas station at the intersection.  "The truck, operated by Bruce Persons Jr, 40, of Jackson then went into reverse and struck a light stanchion," Mastronardy said.  That impact punctured the truck's fuel …

Van Driver In Route 70 Accident Charged With Vehicular Homicide, DWI

Woman who died was heading home after being involved in a fender bender

The driver of the van involved in the Saturday evening accident at the intersection of Route 70 and Massachusetts Avenue faces a slew of charges, including death by auto, driving under the influence, being an unlicensed driver, reckless driving, and leaving the scene of an injury accident, along with other motor vehicle charges, according to Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy. The driver was identified as Abel Hernandez, 127 North Oak Avenue, Lakewood. Hernandez is being held in the Ocean County Jail on $175,000 bail set by Judge James Blaney.  Hernandez is also being held on a detainer from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement due to his illegal status, according to police.  Hernandez allegedly fled the van after the accident…

Police said driver flees after turning head-on into victim's truck

A 71 year-old woman passenger died from injuries after a van turned head-on into a pick-up truck on Route 70 Saturday evening. The driver of the van fled on foot and is now in police custody, officials said. Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy has not released the names of the victims, or the driver of the second vehicle. He said that shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday, a pick-up truck heading westbound on Route 70 struck a van that was making a turn from Route 70 east onto Massachusetts northbound. Services Thursday, Friday for Detective Who Died in Head-on Collision

Funeral services for Tina E. Rambo, an Ocean County detective who died Monday in a head-on collision on Route 70, will be held tomorrow and Friday. According to an obituary prepared by Bradley Funeral Home in Marlton, the viewing will be held 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 8:45 to 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. Isaac Jogues Church, 349 Evesboro Medford Road in Marlton. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Isaac Jogues Church. Interment is in Coleston Cemetery, Cherry Hill. Fatal Accident with 16-Year-Old Pedestrian Near Route 70 and Whitesville Road

Jesse Carbonaro, 16, of Crescent Court, was struck by SUV traveling west, died at scene.

A 16-year-old Toms River resident died while crossing Route 70 at 8:15 p.m., police said, after being struck by a sports utility vehicle traveling westbound on the highway near Whitesville Road. At 3:20 p.m. Tuesday, Toms River Police identified the pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle on Route 70 on Monday night as Jesse Carbonaro, 16, of Crescent Court, Toms River. Toms River Police are investigating the fatal pedestrian accident at Route 70 and the entrance to the Crescent Apartments just west of Whitesville Road, said Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy.  The chief said 37-year-old Laconda Coleman of Lakehurst was driving a 1997 Chevy Tahoe westbound when she struck Carbonaro who was crossing the state road.
