Look, there is no question that the Jackson Animal Shelter is a wonderful facility and that the adoption fees are VERY reasonable compared to other animal shelters in the area, AND to be fair, adopting a pet from them is much, much easier & cheaper then adopting from The Popcorn Park Zoo animal shelter for example, but the issue really is that if they KNEW they had no intention of adopting out those puppies, then why waste everybody's time by bringing them to Pet Smart to be displayed as adoptable pets ? Anyway, just an FYI, it's usually the "Free to good Home" ads that attract the unsavory types, when there is a fee involved, you eliminate some of that garbage.

ReplyActually I this is my 2nd comment in response to the animal shelter posts, I just wanted add one more thing...a family member went to the Pet Smart a few weeks ago and noticed that your facility was there with a few animals on display for adoption, 2 of which were puppies and the volunteer told her that if she was interested in the puppies, all she had to do was go to the shelter the following day and mention the names of the puppies and that she could see them there and fill out an application for adoption.
Well the next day we DID go and when we mentioned that we were there to see these 2 particular puppies, all the volunteers at the desk told us to lower our voices and then quietly informed us that nobody was supposed to know that they had puppies at that facility and that there were actually 9 puppies in there at that time ! But that the general public wasn't supposed to know they were there, so we asked if we could SEE the puppy since this other family member had already seen it the day b4 at Pet Smart, and we were ushered over to a manager and at that point we were informed that ALL 9 puppies were already spoken for by various employees at the facility LOL. So if you could please explain why, if all you're going to do is adopt the puppies for yourselves, why were they put on display at Pet Smart? -

ReplyI'm a little confused, last year, we brought in a case of canned cat food to donate and we were told that you don't accept food donations, and now I'm reading that you do ?, We were at the Spring Fling actually and noticed a few people bringing food to donate so what IS the policy on donating pet food ? Also, about the basket auction, next time it would probably be better if you guys did a raffle ..something like $5 a ticket to try and win one of them. This way more people could participate AND you'd make more $$ for the shelter. Because most of the starting bids were $25 which is pretty steep considering the demographics of that part of Ocean County.

ReplyWOW! Both of those ideas are great ! If you really think about it, Lakehurst is sort of off the beaten path, and driving to either 1 of the 2 dog parks that are in Ocean County is quite a hike ! So I really hope a Lakehurst neighborhood dog park becomes a reality one day :D

I agree with your comment before, about responsible and not so responsible dog owners, the responsible ones would obviously clean up after their dog. The lake area was only a suggestion, there are plenty of other spots to have a dog park in Lakehurst.

A dog park is a fenced in area for dogs and their owners, so you really wouldn't have to worry about poop on your shoes etc, Anywhooo... it's a wonder that you're concerned about dog poop when the entire lake doubles as a toilet for the geese.

The Lakehurst Police dept is really good actually, I guess my point was that this town is so small, that unless a police officer is sitting RIGHT there when it happens, someone who is speeding thru town, is in and out of this town so damned fast, that there is NO time to stop a lot of the drivers that break the law speeding thru town. Drivers that can SEE a police car sitting at the circle automatically slow down ( we all know that because we ALL do that :) is an effective way of reminding drivers to SLOW down, obviously we have a small police dept and they can't "babysit" the rt 70 circle all the time but your idea to have the officers just drive around town more often, would be a good deterrent to speeders who figure because this town is so little, they'll be in and out b4 they can get caught ! So I like your idea !

You're right, the town of Lakehurst is VERY small and those of us that live here, know the speed limits, if however, you're a commuter passing thru Lakehurst on RT 70, if you don't hit any lights, it takes about 3 mins to pass thru Lakehurst lol, this is why I agree with you, the people that are just passing thru here, "fly" thru as if it's not even on the map !, I think they forget that this IS a real town and that all of the rules that apply elsewhere also apply HERE as well ! For example, 25 MPH in a school zone etc

the problem isn't just the seniors, although they ARE a problem, it's also that there are NO street lights along miles of rt70 and at night that creates a BIG problem!, Plus, there is a small diner in Lakehurst called Sandy's and their parking lot is inappropriately small and sits right across form a convenience store that ALSO has a lot of business and when 2 cars are exiting both of those parking lots there is ALWAYS the risk of a collision on that stretch of rt 70 and in the past year right in THAT area there have been several accidents also coming off the rt 70 circle near the Dollar Store Plaza, there are plenty of accidents because people are driving so fast to get around it that they don't yield for drivers who slow to make turns into the various businesses and side streets in that area, its a mess, there should be a police car parked right at the circle in my opinion just so that there is a visible "warning" to slow down.
