Detour: Route 539 Section Will Close Next Week for Railroad Repair

Road will close near railroad crossing from June 24 through June 29

A portion of Route 539 in Whiting will be closed to traffic for several days next week as repairs are made to a railroad crossing.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced that part of the county route will be closed to traffic from 7 a.m. Monday, June 24 to 7 a.m. Saturday, June 29.

The local detour will use Lacey Road, Lake Drive, Monroe Avenue and Hegstrom Road. All truck traffic will be detoured using Route 70 and Route 72, according to the NJDOT.

“In order to provide safer and smoother railroad crossings in Manchester, the freight rail contractor will replace the existing crossing currently buried in the asphalt roadway with a new concrete freight rail crossing and repave the asphalt approaches,” the NJDOT said in a statement. “These projects are included within NJDOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program which repairs, upgrades or removes approximately 30 crossings each year, statewide.”

Weather and other factors could play a factor in the repair timetable. The roadway could reopen sooner than expected should work go ahead of schedule, according to the NJDOT.
